Newton Mayor to Endorse Elizabeth Warren

Less than a month , Newton Mayor Setti Warren has decided to stand behind another Warren.

In an email invitation sent Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Warren said he will endorse Elizabeth Warren at an event Thursday morning at the .

"Although I have ended my own campaign, I still believe, as strongly as ever that Scott Brown has made the wrong decisions for Massachusetts and has hindered our progress as a nation on vital issues like putting Americans back to work and moving our economy forward again," Setti Warren said in the email invitation.

Mayor Warren told Newton Patch Tuesday afternoon that he believes Elizabeth Warren is the strongest candidate to beat Scott Brown next year.

"As I said many times, this country is at a crossroads right now and the decisions that are going to be made over the next several months and years will have an impact on future generations," Setti Warren told Patch.

As for what kind of involvement he will have moving forward, Setti Warren's political advisor Deborah Shah could not comment on specifics, except that the Newton Mayor will play a "very active role" as the campaign unfolds.

In an emailed statement to Newton Patch, Elizabeth Warren's campaign confirmed the endorsement and thanked the Newton mayor for his support.

"I have the deepest respect for Setti Warren for his service to Newton, to our state and to our country. His thoughtful analysis of the challenges facing Massachusetts’s families shows both compassion and courage. I am grateful for his endorsement, and I look forward to his counsel and support going forward," the statement said.

After five months of campaigning and more than 110 campaign stops, the Newton mayor dropped out of the U.S. Senate race in late September. Overshadowed by financial difficulties and Elizabeth Warren's decision to run, Setti Warren told supporters he "did not see a clear path to victory."

Warren, who is an attorney and former professor at Harvard Law School, has a long list of political involvement and influence, most recently serving as special advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

As for the remainder of the candidates running, the Newton Mayor said Tuesday that he has "always supported an active primary" but believes strongly that Elizabeth Warren's beliefs and convictions align with his and that she is the one who can beat Scott Brown.
