Judge Rules on Whether Newton Mayor Will Have to Testify in Suit Against City

Former Secretary Jeanne Sweeney Mooney's suit alleged she was set up on false charges by the former police chief.

Mayor Setti Warren will not have to testify in the suit by a former Newton Police secretary against the city, a federal judge ruled.

The city has maintained that Warren had no role in the case. Secretary Jeanne Sweeney Mooney sued the city alleging that she was set up on false charges of stealing funds from the department after she filed complaints against former Police Chief Matthew Cummings.

Mooney’s attorney filed a motion to have Warren testify after Cummings alleged that Warren was involved in bringing charges against Mooney.
