Newton Resident to Deliver Keynote at Democratic Convention

The convention will take place July 13.

When the state Democratic Party gathers next week for its 2013 platform convention, a Newtn resident will take to the microphone to deliver a keynote address.

Newton resident Donald Berwick will lead off the group of three keynote speakers, all of whom have expressed a desire to run in the 2014 gubernatorial election.

Berwick, a pediatrician and longtime Harvard faculty member, served as a health care official with the Obama administration. He first indicated he was considering a run for governor in January of this year.

Additional speakers at the convention will include State Senator Dan Wolf of Harwich and Joe Avellone of Wellesley, according to a press release. More speakers are expected to be announced in the coming days.

In addition to Berwick, another Newton resident, State Treasurer Steve Grossman, is expected to announce his plans to run for governor soon.

The 2013 State Democratic Convention will take place July 13 at the Tsongas Center on the campus of UMass Lowell.
