Ward 2 Resident Joins Race for Newton School Committee

With Steenstrup joining the race, the Ward 2 School Committee seat looks to be contested.

Kimball Terrace resident Andrea Steenstrup announced this week she is joining the race for Newton's Ward 2 School Committee seat.

Steenstrup, who moved to Newton in 2007, has served as a Cabot Elementary PTO member as well as a School Council member at Cabot, F.A. Day Middle and Newton North High, according to a press release issued May 8.

Professionally, Steenstrup has had experience in various finance roles, including working as the Director of Finance at CIGNA Healthcare, the press release said. She was also the fundraising chair for F.A. Day as well as the treasurer and vice president for finance on the Cabot PTO.

“I am a big fan of Newton Public Schools. I would love the opportunity to bring my financial background and hands-on experience in elementary, middle and high school in Newton to help maintain the excellent public schools,” Steenstrup said in her press release.

Steenstrup, who pulled nomination papers on May 8, is the second potential candidate for the Ward 2 School Committee seat; former candidate Margaret Albright took out papers for the seat last week.

Albright ran for the Ward 2 School Committee seat in 2011, but lost to current member Jonathan Yeo. Yeo has reached his term limit on the School Committee and therefore will not be running for reelection.

Nomination papers are due back in to the Newton Election Commission by July 30, and must include the required number of voter signatures. Potential candidates running for School Committee seats, which are elected city-wide, must collect 150 voter signatures before they are certified as a candidate.
