Work Starts on Rail Trail in Newton Upper Falls

Work crews began removing the rails of an unused railroad and started creating a new bicycle and pedestrian path in Newton Upper Falls Friday afternoon.

A crowd gathered to celebrate the Upper Falls Greenway, which runs parallel to Needham Street from Easy Street to the Needham line. Mayor Setti Warren thanked those responsible for making the new path a reality - the Upper Falls Area Council, Ward 5 Aldermen John Rice, Deborah Crossley and Brian Yates, the Newton Bicycle/Pedestrian Task Force, and Transportation Secretary Richard Davey.

The city and the MassDOT signed a 99-year lease on the land for $1.
