Do You Feel Safe Sending Your Children to School After Second Newton Teacher Arrest?

Former F.A. Day Middle School teacher Steven Chan was arrested on child pornography charges a year and a half after another teacher was busted on similar charges.

Newton School officials tried to allay parents' fears Tuesday night at F.A. Day Middle School less than a week after a teacher was arrested for having child pornography on his computer.

Public safety is the top priority for the schools, Mayor Setti Warren said during the community meeting, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

Chan taught math at Day and also served as coach for the Newton North High School boys gymnastics team. He was arrested for having pornographic images of underage children and also disseminating them.

This arrest comes about a year and a half after another Newton teacher, former Underwood Elementary School teacher David Ettlinger, was arrested on child pornography charges. The same month Peter Buchanan, a part-time Newton Library employee was charged with possession of child pornography.
