Group Wants to Start Foreign Language Immersion School in Newton

The Chinese Immersion Charter School of Newton would have grades K-12.

A group seeks to create a charter school in Newton where students would be immersed in a foreign language.

The Chinese Immersion Charter School of Newton would serve grades K-12 and would be open to students not only in Newton but also Brookline, Waltham, Watertown, Weston and Cambridge. It is one of 10 groups in Massachusetts submitting proposed charter schools.

"For each prospectus, we'll look closely at how well the founding groups articulate their vision for delivering an outstanding educational program to students, and then invite final applications where appropriate," said Mitchell Chester, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, according to an announcement from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The school would have a maximum enrollment of 884 students.

Finalists will be contacted by mid-September, and Chester will choose the top finalists to recommend to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education in February.
