Newton South Journalists Snag National Awards

Newton South's student newspaper and website each won recognition.

Newton South's student newspaper and news website garnered honors at a national journalism conference in Boston over the weekend.

The Lion's Roar and Denebola both placed in the top 10 of their categories in the best in show competition at the Journalism Education Association and National Scholastic Press Association, according to Newton South English teacher Brian Barron.

Denebola earned third-place in the country in the Large School Website category, and The Roar placed sixth in the Newspaper Broadsheet of 16 or more pages. The competition is open to any publication whose staff attended the conference, held at the Hynes Convention Center and the Sheraton Boston.

Members of the Lion's Roar staff also earned individual recognition in on-site competitions where participants use their journalism skills, known as Write-offs.

Sophomore Nathaniel Bolter won a superior rating - the highest possible - in news editing and headline writing, junior Hyunnew Choi received an honorable mention in news writing, and senior Yonatan Gazit was awarded an honorable mention in sports writing.
