Proposed Newton Charter School Hits Roadblock

The proposed Mandarin-immersion school was not invited to submit an application to become a charter school.

A group's hopes of bringing a Mandarin-language charter school have been ended by Massachusetts school officials.

This week, the Chinese Immersion Charter School of Newton proposal was one of three schools not invited to submit an application by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Boston Globe reported. Seven others were invited to submit an application.

The Mandarin immersion school would have served grades K-12 and was to have been open to students not only in Newton but also Brookline, Waltham, Watertown, Weston and Cambridge.
