Charity Beanpot Benefits Organization Honoring Newton Resident Killed on Sept. 11

A hockey tournament to benefit two organizations, including one which honors a Newton resident killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, will be held next week at Boston University's Agganis Arena and the TD Garden.

The sixth annual Charity Beanpot Challenge will be held on Monday, Feb. 11, according to a press release. The hockey tournament, being put on by the Travis Roy Foundation and the Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation, has raised $595,000 since its inception.

Mark Bavis, a Newton resident, was working as a scout for the Los Angeles Kings in 2001. He was aboard the second plane that crashed into the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001. Travis Roy was playing in his first hockey game for Boston University in 1995 when a crash into the boards left him paralyzed. 

The Charity Beanpot Challenge includes 60 players who raise money through online donations for the two organizations. Each player takes part in two scrimmages on Monday afternoon, with the consolation and final games slated for Monday night. 

"The Charity Beanpot Challenge has turned into one of our most successful fundraisers, as the continued generosity of the hockey community is amazing," said Travis Roy, in a press release. “It also makes fundraising a lot easier when the players are eager to participate each year.”
