Despite an impressive second half and a strong fourth quarter drive, the boys' basketball team was not able to defeat Brockton Wednesday night in the South Div. 1 semi-finals.
The #4 Brockton Boxers beat out the #5 Tigers 49-44, the Boston Globe reported this morning.
According to the Globe report, the Boxers outrebounded Newton North 40-20. However, Brockton almost lost an 18-point lead in the final seconds of the game, until Brockton's Jamal Reuben blocked a three-point shot from Newton's Michael Thorpe to break the Tigers' streak.
Thorpe led the Tigers with nine points, six rebounds and five assists, the Globe said.
According to Mayor Setti Warren's Twitter feed, the Tigers had full support in the crowd during the game.
Last year, the Tigers also faced a heartbreaking loss at the end of the season when
Newton North finishes their 2011-2012 season 19-4. Meanwhile, Brockton will go on to the South Div. 1 finals at UMass Boston. The Boxers will face Madison Park Saturday at 4 p.m.
