Newton Indoor Track Teams Take All-State Title

Both the Newton North boys' and girls' indoor track teams finished in first place at the all-state meet.

, both the boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams took home first place in Sunday’s All-State Championship.

The Newton North teams beat out fellow competitors from across the state to take the top honors in this year’s all-state meet, which was held at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Roxbury.

On the girls’ side, Junior Carla Forbes lead the team once again with a second place finish in the girls 55 meter dash and a first place finish in the long jump.

Juniors Meghan Bellerose and Madison Nadeau, who managed top-10 finishes in other running events, also helped the Newton North girls take the title.

Senior Kayla Wong snagged the team some points with her third place finish in the 55 meter hurdles.

As a team, the girls also took first place in the 4x400 meter relay. Team members included Wong, Forbes, Bellerose and Nadeau.

Some other highlights from Sunday’s All-State Indoor Track Championship include:

  • Newton North junior Madison Nadeau finished sixth in the 300 meter dash
  • Newton North junior Meghan Bellerose finished eighth in the 600 meter run
  • The Newton North team finished 19th in the 4x200 meter relay
  • The Newton North team finished 13th in the 4x800 meter relay
  • The Newton South team finished 15th in the 4x800 meter relay
  • Senior Kayla Wong placed sixth in the long jump 
  • Newton North senior Kayla Prior placed 12th in the long jump
  • Newton North junior Maeve Larkin placed 19th in the long jump

 

Boys

The Newton North boys’ team also took home top honors Sunday thanks to a number of athletes including senior Swardick Mayanja, who placed first in the shot put event.

Justin Keefe, a Newton North senior, snagged the team three points with his sixth place finish in the 1,000 meter run.

The boys’ relay teams also played a big part in the team’s strong finish; the Newton North 4x200 relay team finished third with a time of 1:32. Runners included junior Ryan Lucken, senior Nate Menninger, junior Daniel Swain and senior Shawn Seamons.

Several of the 4x200 team runners also helped take home first place in the 4x400 event.

The Newton South boys' team, who finished 22nd overall in the all-state meet, placed third in the 4x400 event. 

Some other highlights from Sunday’s All-State Indoor Track Championship include:

  • Newton North sophomore Gabe Montague placed 17th in the 1,000 meter run
  • Allen Shiu, a Newton South sophomore, finished 10th in the boys two mile run
  • Newton South junior Jung Park finished seventh in the 55 meter hurdles
  • Newton North junior Leslie Whitham II finished ninth in the shot put
  • Newton North senior Young Guang finished 12th in the shot put
