Newton North Boys Volleyball Team Headed to State Tournament

The Tigers faced the Newton South Lions in the South Div. 1 boys volleyball final Sunday afternoon.

Facing their cross-town rivals for the third year in a row, the Tigers had quite a match up in the 2012 South Div. 1 final against .

Nevertheless, the north side team defended their division crown, as they successfully defeated the Lions 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Quincy High School. 

The Tigers, who are now 19-1 on the 2012 season, will move on to the state tournament. As of Sunday evening, the teams and game times for the state tournament were not yet announced.

This is the third year in a row the two Newton teams have faced off in the boys volleyball South Div. 1 final; and in 2010, Newton South came out on top. 

No. 5-ranked Newton South team started its tournament play with a 3-2 win over No. 4 Barnstable in the division quarterfinals. South then went on to defeat No. 1 North Quincy 3-1 in the semifinals Friday night.

Meanwhile, No. 2-ranked Newton North rose to the top after . The Tigers then went on 3-0 Friday night.

The Newton South boys volleyball team finishes its season with a 16-7 record overall.

Last year, semifinals, but lost 3-2.
