Newton North Girls' Soccer Team Plays Thriller in State Semifinal

The Tigers played Franklin for a spot in the state final.

Newton North and Franklin battled to a 1-1 tie late in the second half of the state semifinal of the Div. 1 girls' soccer state semifinal Tuesday night when Shannon Fitzgerald struck.

The Tigers' senior took a pass from teammate Angela Ward and put the ball past Franklin's goalkeeper with seven minutes left in the game, played at Taunton High School, according to a report on ESPN Boston. The goal was Fitzgerald's 29th of the season.

The goal also completed a comeback for Newton North, which trailed Franklin 1-0 after a goal 10 minutes into the second half. Ward tied the game up with a header three minutes later, according to ESPN Boston.

The Tigers will play Minnechaug in the state final on Friday night at 5 p.m. at Worcester State University.
