Newton Parks and Rec Honors Newton North Athlete

The top baseball player in Newton will receive an award during the 44th annual Hamil Award Luncheon.

At lunchtime Wednesday, the Newton Parks and Recreation Department will bestow the 44th Annual Bill Hamill Memorial Trophy.

This year's trophy goes to Brendan Ryan from Newton North High School. According to a press release from Parks and Rec, the trophy is given annually to the city's top high school baseball player.

According to an ESPN blog, Ryan is a right-handed pitcher who earned MVP honors in the 2013 Bay State Conference Carey division. He will attend University of South Carolina in the fall.

The press release explains that Hamil was a star three-sport athlete at Newton High School leading up to his graduation in 1955. He played two years of baseball for Holy Cross before signing with the Red Sox organization, where he played in the farm system with the Eastern League at Allentown, Penn., for four years.

In 1969, Hamil suffered a brain hemorrhage and died. The award in his memory was created in 1970.
