Newton South Quarterback Taking Part in Elite Player Combine

Lions junior Nick Heras has several colleges already recruiting him.

Newton South junior quarterback Nick Heras has been selected to take part in the U.S. Army National Combine taking place from Jan. 2-4 in San Antonio, Texas.

The event is part of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, a game featuring the top seniors and will be televised on NBC. The combine includes the top 500 high school football underclassmen, according to organizers.

The combine is the first opportunity for the nation’s top underclassmen to who off their physical talent and compete against one another in front of top scouting organizations.

“It is an honor to be invited to a national event like this and be able to show what you can do,” Heras said. “Having the opportunity to be around other top quarterbacks in the country is very special and can only help make me better. You can always pick something up from watching other quarterbacks and learn from each other. It will be fun.”

Heras is one of the top quarterback recruits from the Boston area and is being recruited by several schools, said DeBartolo Sports Quarterback Coach Joe Dickinson, who trained some of the top quarterback recuits.

“Nick is the top dual threat quarterback from the Boston area.” Dickinson said. “He (Heras) broke his hand in the 5th game and missed the second half of the 2013 season, but was very impressive early on. Boston College and Dartmouth are among several schools recruiting him.”

The combine has been attended by some star players, including Jamaal Charles (Kansas City Chiefs), Percy Harvin (Seattle Seahawks), LeSean McCoy (Philadelphia Eagles), DeMarco Murray (Dallas Cowboys), Patrick Peterson (Arizona Cardinals) and Donte Whitner (San Francisco 49ers).
