Newton Swim Team Stays (Nearly) Perfect

The Bluefish defeated Millis yesterday, 250-169, and will head to its first championship this Saturday.

After its 500th win last month against Sherborn, the Newton Bluefish swim team continues to move its way through the summer season without much of a stumble.

The Bluefish team, which is made up of boys and girls ages 8-18, is currently 8-0 in the Summer Suburban Swim League. The latest win was tallied last night in a home meet against Millis, with a final score of 250-169. 

Last week, the Newton team in a match that involved more than 400 swimmers. The Bluefish came out on top 236-145.

The only win Newton has not managed this season was during the mile swim last Friday, July 27. The team finished second overall, behind Framingham. The boys came in third and the girls in second, with Amanda Graf as the top swimmer for the Newton girls and Cassidy Bastianelli as the top swimmer for the Newton boys. 

This season's domination is not unlike the 2011 summer Bluefish season; the team finished the summer 11-0 with the "A" and "B" championship title as well as first place in the girls' mile swim.

Now, the swimmers are gearing up for another meet this week followed by the "B" championships on Sat., August 4. These championships are for those swimmers who don't have fast enough times to make the "A" Championship cutoff. 

The "A" championships will be held the following Saturday, August 11.

The next Bluefish meet will take place tomorrow, Aug. 2, at 6 p.m. against the Needham Sharks at Hawes Pool in Norwood. The "B" championships will be held Saturday at in Newton (time TBA).
