Newton Tournament Update: Victories for Volleyball, Baseball and Softball

Although the rain delayed start times and pushed off some victories, the city of Newton was well represented in MIAA spring sports tournament play this weekend.

Here is a recap of what you may have missed:

Friday

• The No. 2 Newton North boys volleyball team in the South Div. 1 semifinals to move on to the division finals.

• The No. 5 Newton South boys volleyball team defeated North Quincy 3-1 in the South Div. 1 semifinals to move on to the division finals against North.

• The No. 7 Newton North girls lacrosse team lost to Notre Dame Academy, 18-6, in the South Div. 1 quarterfinals. The Tigers finished 13-6-1 overall. 

• The No. 14 Newton North girls tennis team lost to North Attleboro, 4-1, in a first round game of the South Div. 1 tournament. The team finished 8-8 on the season. 

• The No. 5 Newton South girls tennis team defeated Methuen 5-0 in the first round of the North Div. 1 tournament. They will face Masconomet Regional on Wednesday, June 6 at 3:30 p.m. in Masconomet (delayed game from Monday).

Saturday

All games delayed due to rain.

Sunday

• The No. 8 Newton North boys tennis team defeated Weymouth 5-0 in a first round game of the South Div. 1 tournament. The Tigers will go on to the quarterfinals on Tues., June 5.

• The No. 2 Newton North boys volleyball team . The Tigers will move on to the state tournament where they will face the Central Mass. champion.

• The No. 3 Newton North softball team defeated Methuen 6-1 in a North Div. 1 first round game. The team will go on to face Chelmsford on Tues., June 5.

• The No. 22 Newton North baseball team defeated Billerica 5-4 in a North Div. 1 first round game. The team will go on to face St. John's Prep on Tues., June 5.

• The No. 19 Newton South baseball team lost to St. John's Prep, 5-2 in a North Div. 1 first round game. The team finishes the season 11-11 overall.

• The No. 12 Newton North boys lacrosse team fell to Billerica 9-8 in a first round game of the East Div. 1 tournament. The Tigers finish the season at 14-5 overall.

• The No. 9 Mount Alvernia softball team lost to Lynnfield 9-2 in a North Div. 3 first round game. They finish the season 14-8 overall.

Upcoming games

Monday

• The All-State outdoor track championships are scheduled to take place this afternoon at Fitchburg State University. 

Tuesday

• The No. 22 Newton North baseball team will face No. 3 St. John's Prep at St. John's Prep. Game time is 4 p.m.

• The No. 8 Newton North boys tennis team will face either Needham or Marshfield in a quarterfinal match. Game time and location to be determined.

• The No. 3 Newton North softball team will face No. 11 Chelmsford at Albemarle Field in Newton. Game time is 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday

• The No. 5 Newton South girls tennis team will face No. 4 Masconomet Regional at Masconomet Regional. Game time is 3:30 p.m.

To Be Determined

• The South Div. 1 champions, Newton North boys volleyball team, will face the Central Mass. champions. Game time and location to be determined.
