Rhode Island's Big First Inning Dooms Newton Little League

After Sunday's loss, Newton SouthEast is now 0-2 in pool play of the New England regional tournament in Bristol, Conn.

Forget about saving the best for last. Rhode Island didn't feel like waiting around. And as a result, Newton SouthEast finds itself in a position it had hoped to avoid.

Lincoln, R.I., scored six times in the top of the first inning on Sunday and though the locals chipped away in an attempt to make a scrappy comeback, it wasn't enough during a 14-8 loss on Sunday.

According to an online box score of the game, Newton bounced back from the first inning outburst with a run in the bottom of the second and three tallies in the third inning.

Lincoln responded, however, with a five-run outburst in the fourth inning to regain the momentum. Aside from the opening inning, SouthEast scored in every inning of the game, but it wasn't enough.

Brandon Lee led the Newton attack in the losing cause as he knocked in four runs, the highest total for either team. Adam Freedman had two hits on the afternoon.

The setback dropped Newton to 0-2 in pool play with two games remaining. After a day off on Monday, the team hopes to get into the win column at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when it takes on Rye, N.H., which is 0-1 as of Sunday. The game will be televised on NESN, as will Newton's Wednesday tilt against Westport, Conn.
