Successful Weekend for Newton North Sports Squads

The girls' soccer, girls' volleyball and cross country teams were in action this weekend. Newton South runners also had a good showing.

Newton North athletes enjoyed a memorable weekend as the girls' soccer, girls' volleyball and cross country teams enjoyed success. 

The Tigers girls' soccer squad took on Acton-Boxborough in the Div. 1 North Section final at Lynn's Manning Field. The game remained scoreless until 15 minutes left in the game when Shannon Fitzgerald scored the lone goal of the game. Newton North moves on to the state semifinal where they will face South Section champions Franklin on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Taunton High School.

Volleyball

Newton North's girls' volleyball team also moved on to the state semifinals. The Tigers rolled over North Quincy 3-0 in the Div. 1 Central-East Section Final at Hudson High School. Newton North now takes on Concord-Carlisle on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Canton High School.

Cross Country

Newton North senior Mike Schlichting finished first in the Div. 1 Eastern State Cross Country Championship in Wrentham with a time of 15:29.90. Teammate and senior Gabe Montague finished third in the race and the Tigers took fourth place in the team competition. Newton South senior Allen Shiu finished 11th in the race and the team also finished 11th.

In the girls Div. 1 Eastern State Cross Country Championship Newton South sophomore Rebecca Grusby finished third with a time of 18:48.50, and Newton North senior Maeve Greeley finished fifth. Two other Newton South runners finished in the top 20 - senior Lucrecia Aguilar (12th) and freshman Claire Martin (16th) - helping the Lions to finish 5th in the team competition, a place ahead of the Tigers.

The All-State Cross Country Championship will be Saturday in Gardner.
