The Family That Fights Breast Cancer Together...

One Newton family decided that a family member's breast cancer diagnosis was the push they needed to get involved in the prevention of the disease.

One Newton family was looking for a way to honor a breast cancer survivor very close to them while at the same time supporting the thousands of people who battle the disease every day.

Matt Mahoney's mother beat her stage II breast cancer diagnosis, but her experience prompted Mahoney and his wife, Kristine Munroe-Mahoney to seek out ways to become involved in the fight.

The two found their way to the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition's Against the Tide Aug. 17 event in Brewster, Mass., and decided to get involved.

Team "Beat HER2+ for Paula" is comprised of Mahoney and Munroe-Mahoney; their 3-year-old son, Isaac; Mahoney's sister, Sarah Mahoney; and Jon Walsh, Sarah Mahoney's boyfriend.

According to a press release, Matt Mahoney is a neurobiologist and his sister is a cancer researcher, backgrounds that led them to MBCC. MBCC "focuses on breast cancer prevention, rather than treatment," the press release reads.

Against the Tide events invite teams to collect pledges for the team's participation in a variety of activities including running, swimming, kayaking and walking.

According to Matt Mahoney's fundraising page, he's participating in the 1-mile swim, 10K run, and 2-mile kayak events. Munroe-Mahoney's page indicates she and their son will be participating in a walking event.

The second event of the year, the one in which the Mahoney's are participating, takes place Aug. 17 at Nickerson State Park in Brewster.
