Emergency officials in Newton will have a new tool at their disposal to help them locate individuals who have gone missing. The SafetyNet by LowJack Service is a bracelet that can be worn by individuals with cognitive disorders, such as dementia or autism. Each bracelet emits a constant Radio Frequency signal, as opposed to a cellular or GPS signal that relies on cellular networks, and can often be tracked even when a person is in shallow water, a wooded area or a concrete structure. “With these specially-designed bracelets, local authorities are able to conduct much more efficient search and rescue missions,” said Dennis Dowling, captain of the Newton Police Department. The Newton School Committee last week recognized and accepted a gift for Bowen Elementary School that came as part of a Bowen teacher's Awesome Teacher of the Year Award. Bowen kindergarten teacher Helen Sheehy won the Awesome Teacher of the Year Award from mySchoolBucks.com after numerous Bowen parents submitted nomination letters on her behalf, according to a press release from the school system. The Joint Committee on Revenue in the Massachusetts legislature held a hearing last week on the notion of a potential meals tax holiday for August and one supporting group liking its chances. According to the state's Restaurant and Business Alliance (R.A.B.A), the hearing held Tuesday, May 14, for the Meals Tax Holiday Bill saw "no sign of opposition" to the measure. Twelve legislators have signed on to the bill primarily sponsored by Rep. Keiko Orrall of Lakeville and Sen. Michael O. Moore of Millbury. If passed, the legislation would go into effect from Sunday, Aug. 11 through Thursday, Aug. 15. Mayor Setti Warren and Rabbi Eric Gurvis, president of the Newton Clergy Association, invite guests to the 39th annual event scheduled to take place at 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29 at Boston College's McElroy Commons.
