Letter: Hire or Dismiss Teachers Based on Evaluation, Not Seniority

A Boston College student writes in support of House Bill H3883, which calls for hiring, dismissal, and transfer decisions to be based on teacher evaluations, rather than on seniority.

As an aspiring educator, I am passionate about the influence a teacher can have on students. In January I began student teaching at a Boston Public School, where I have witnessed a great teacher at work.  This teacher has taught in other schools before, but it is her first year at this school.  Many of her students misbehave, which could reduce learning time. But despite such challenges, she has created an effective learning environment through good management skills and student-teacher relationships.  She has one of the highest homework completion rates in the school, her students recently outperformed the district on the ANETs (tests aligned with the standards of the MCAS), and her students are regularly engaged during class.  Her …

As President of the Massachusetts Teachers Association I was happy to meet with Ms. Stack and her colleagues from Students for Education Reform. We had a great discussion about the importance of teachers unions and the importance of teacher evaluations to help teachers improve at their work. We also talked about the need for administrators to conduct fair and objective evaluations while providing…   more ›

Letter: Sheff Introduces Campaign for Governor's Council

Newton resident Tom Sheff will be running as an Independent in the District 3 Governor's Council race.

I'd like to thank all the people who signed my nomination papers and those who helped me gather signatures. We did it! I couldn't have done it without your help and support. I'd like to announce that I am running for the Governor's Council seat in District 3 (for a full list of cities/towns in District 3, go to www.tomsheff.com). While many people will be concentrating on the higher profile campaigns, I hope you take the time to learn a little about the Governor's Council. Many active political junkies don't even know what the Governor's Council does.   The Massachusetts Governor's Council provides advice and consent to the Governor of Massachusetts, particularly about judicial nominations, justices of the peace and criminal pardons. For …

Editor's Notebook: An International Networking Session

I recently had a chance to meet with a colleague in the news business, who works some 7,600 miles away.

Networking in any field is a good practice. But what I think is even more important than the schmoozing and the sharing of resumes is the part that involves listening. Just stopping to listen to what your colleagues do, why and how they do it.  Earlier this week I had a chance to sit down and chat with a woman by the name of Sai Thakur, the director of the print media firm Tarun Bharat Daily Pvt. Ltd. based out of southwestern India. The meeting came by way of an introduction from the Newton Rotary Club, a group I visited last week during a "Patch Academy" -- a brief information session where I gave an overview about what Newton Patch is and how the community can use our site.  Thakur, 29, arrived here last weekend as part of a Rotary …

Letter: Think Outside the Bottle for Earth Day

A local business owner is hoping to encourage other businesses to leave bottled water behind.

As a small business owner serving the Newton community, protecting the environment where we live and work is important to me. That's why 7ate9 Bakery took Corporate Accountability International's “Think Outside the Bottle” pledge to be a bottled water free establishment.  Bottled water’s environmental impact is significant when one considers that we all have a low-impact alternative: the tap. Ounce for ounce, it takes nearly 2,000 times the energy to produce and distribute bottled water than it does for tap water.  Even industry studies admit the tap has a smaller energy footprint than bottled water. Bottled water corporations have long tried to convince us that the only safe water comes in a bottle. But the truth is that public water is …
