Newton Police Kick Off "Click It Or Ticket" Safety Campaign

The campaign will run through June 3.

Newton Police will be focusing on seatbelt safety for the next three weeks as part of a "Click It or Ticket" campaign aimed at increasing seatbelt usage in Newton and across Massachusetts. According to Newton Police Officer Dan Devine, the campaign runs May 14-June 3 and is funded through an $8,000 grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety (Mass EOPS). During the campaign, which falls during prom and Memorial Day season, officers will focus on seatbelt usage during car stops.  Devine clarified that officers cannot pull over a vehicle just for seatbelt usage, but can issue a citation if the vehicle is pulled over for another offense. In 2011, Devine said the state of Massachusetts had a 74 percent seatbelt usage rate.  …

Fight at Newton South Several Newton teens will have to appear in court for assault charges after police responded to Newton South High School Friday for reports of a fight involving several female students. According to reports, a 17-year-old female student and a 16-year-old female student will face charges of assault and battery. Another 17-year-old female student will be charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (foot). Telephone threat A 31-year-old Waltham woman will have to appear in court after she allegedly threatened a Newton woman over the phone sometime Friday morning. Vandalism Police responded to Newtonville Avenue on Thursday for reports of vandalism. According to reports, sometime Wednesday night someone shot two BBs at the door of a building, breaking the glass. Car vandalism A Green Court resident told police Thursday that someone vandalized his two vehicles while they were parked in the street overnight. According to reports, the resident said someone poured something into the vehicles' transmissions that prevented the cars from starting.  Theft at Solstice An employee working at Solstice Sunglasses in the Mall at Chestnut Hill told police Thursday that a pair of Gucci sunglasses had been taken from the store.  According to reports, a group of people walked into the store -- two males and one …

Updated: Water Main Break at Coleman House

A couple of apartments were flooded as well as some offices, but everyone is OK.

UPDATED 11:42 a.m. with more info from JCHE staff. Newton Fire Department crews responded to the Coleman House on Winchester Street around 11 a.m. this morning for reports of a water main break in the building. According to Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE) Director of Communications Susan Goodman, one resident apartment and one staff apartment were flooded as well as a couple of offices. Goodman said everyone is safe and the proper crews are on scene now to shut off water and address the problem.  JCHE staff is currently working with the one resident whose apartment was flooded and has been in contact with family to make arrangements for that resident.  The Coleman House is a Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE) …

Newton Police Warn of Recent Phone Scam

Residents should never give out personal information to a stranger, especially over the phone, police said.

The Newton Police Department is reminding residents this week to never give out personal information over the phone, as police have taken several reports of phone scams in recent days. According to Lt. Bruce Apotheker, the department has received about a half dozen reports over the last few days from residents at Cabot Park Village reporting a phone scam. Apotheker said a man who calls himself "Tim Mcrea" has made calls and left messages stating he is a social security administrator. He tells residents that a fire has destroyed a number of social security records and that their social security checks would be delayed, Apotheker said.  The caller also leaves the phone number of 301-968-7344, Apotheker said, and states the resident needs to …

Weapon reported near school turns out to be a BB gun Newton Police responded to Pine Street on Monday around 3:20 p.m. after a parent at the Burr School spotted a man point a gun at a house on Pine Street and proceed inside.  After receiving the call, police told all parents and children to leave the playground area and stay inside the school. Police then went to the back yard of the Pine Street home and found several bottles and cans with BB gun holes. Police spoke with a man at the home, who confirmed he had recently purchased a BB gun and he was just brining it inside. Evan Hoffman Pleads Guilty to Motor Vehicle Homicide, Sentenced

Evan Hoffman, 23, pleaded guilty to a charge of motor vehicle homicide this morning in Newton District Court, a charge that stems from a June 26, 2010 Beacon Street crash.

Updated 11:53 a.m. with more details from Wednesday's court proceedings. A Newton native was sentenced to the House of Corrections today after pleading guilty to a motor vehicle homicide charge that stems from a June 2010 crash.  Evan Hoffman, 23, appeared in Newton District Court this morning for what would have been the start of a jury trial for his motor vehicle homicide case. Instead, Hoffman pleaded guilty to the charges and the jury trial did not proceed.  District Court Judge Dyanne Klein sentenced Hoffman to two and a half years in the House of Corrections with 15 months to be served, balance suspended for five years. UPDATED: Missing Man Makes Contact with Family Appears to be OK

Christopher Carroll, 34, was last seen at the Budget Inn in Westwood on Saturday, May 5 and before that, was listed as a Newton resident.

Police Log: Bike Thief Spotted and False Reports of an Armed Man

Armed man? A Newton man was cited for making false crime reports after he claimed an armed man was outside his apartment waving a handgun at him.  According to reports, police received a call from a resident at the Walnut Street Apartments Saturday night who claimed a group of men buzzed his apartment and one of the men was "armed." When the dispatcher asked the caller to elaborate on the situation, he did not. Instead, he hung up, reports said. Police responded to the apartment complex but did not find anything. Reports noted that police responded to the same address on March 2 for a similar report of a man with a weapon. Stolen iPhones A woman told police Friday that someone stole her iPhone while it was in an unlocked locker at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC. The woman said she believed the phone was stolen Tuesday sometime between 6:15 p.m. - 7 p.m.  Another woman told police Thursday that someone had also stolen her iPhone from an unlocked locker at the JCC. The woman said she placed her phone in a bag and put the bag in the locker around 6:15 p.m. She returned around 7:30 p.m. to find the phone missing.  Teen arrested A Newton teen was arrested Thursday after police responded to California Street for reports of a family disturbance.
