John Lawn Wins Reelection to 10th Middlesex Rep. Seat

Lawn easily defeated his Republican challenger.

State Rep. John Lawn bested Republican challenger Francis Stanton in the race for the 10th Middlesex state representative seat. Lawn easily slid to victory with 10,406 total votes to Stanton's 3,290, according to election results. In Watertown, Lawn received 3,211 votes to Stanton's 684. In Newton, Lawn received 1,775 votes to Stanton's 492. In Waltham, Lawn got 5,420 votes to Stanton's 2,114.  Speaking at his victory party at The Gaff, a Waltham bar, Lawn said he would start the new legislative term by focusing on three priorities — jobs, the fate of the Fernald property in Waltham and repealing the statute of limitations on prosecuting sexual abuse of children. Lawn said the biggest priority district-wide was jobs. 10th Middlesex Candidates Raised More Than $100K for Special Election

The election's eventual winner, John Lawn, raised more than $47,000

In the short, five-month period of campaigning for the 10th Middlesex state representative special election, candidates raised more than $100,000 and spent more than $96,000.  According to reports from the Office of Campaign and Political Finance, the spending reports covered activity from January 1 to May 30 of this year. John Lawn, the election's eventual winner, raised the most money at just over $47,000. Lawn beat out three other Democrats in an April primary election including Newton Alderman Allan Ciccone Jr., Waltham City Councilor Gary Marchese and Waltham resident Sean Durkee.  Lawn, a Town Councilor from Watertown, defeated Republican James Dixon in the special election held in May to replace former State Rep. Victory For John Lawn in 10th Middlesex State Rep. Race

Watertown's Lawn defeats Republican James Dixon by more than 900 votes.

John Lawn handily won the special election last night for the 10th Middlesex District State Rep. seat, defeating Republican James Dixon. Around 9 p.m. last night, Dixon called Lawn to concede, after unofficial results showed that Lawn had won all 10th Middlesex precincts, 1,814 votes to 858 for Dixon. (See videos of both candidates from their election night events by clicking the video on the right) Lawn, who gathered with supporters at Fit Z’s Bar and Grille in Watertown, garnered 374 votes in Newton to 145 for Dixon. Where to Vote in Newton for May 10 Special State Election

List of polling locations for the 10th Middlesex state representative election.

Voters from Newton, Waltham and Watertown will head to the polls Tues., May 10 to decide the next state representative for the 10th Middlesex District.  Democratic candidate John Lawn, of Watertown, will face Waltham Republican Jim Dixon. Voters in parts of Newton, Waltham and Watertown will head to the polls Tuesday, May 10 to choose their next state representative for the 10th Middlesex District. Voters from Newton, Waltham and Watertown will head to the polls Tuesday to decide on their candidates for the May 10 special election to replace former 10th Middlesex State Representative Peter Koutoujian.  The Democratic candidates running include Waltham's Sean Durkee and Gary Marchese, Watertown's John Lawn and Newton's Allan Ciccone, Jr. (Jay). Week in Review: A Community Rally, the School Budget and a Shooting

Miss something this week in Newton? Here's a roundup of headlines from the last seven days.

The week started out with a rally and roundtable discussion on Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding at the Newton Community Service Center. Mayor Setti Warren met with U.S. Rep. Barney Frank and several members of the community to talk about how CDBG funding has impacted the lives of people in Newton and why it is important to continue the federally funded program.  Also on Monday, the School Committee held its first of three meetings for the week. During Monday's meeting, the superintendent gave his fiscal 2012 budget presentation, outlining a $4.4 million budget gap and the suggested cuts to close that gap. The committee would meet again on Wednesday to discuss cuts to regular education programs and again on Thursday to …

Candidates will have to a choice to make if they are elected to the state representative position.

Will those running for the 10th Middlesex District state representative seat keep their local post if they win the state position? The Democratic candidates running for the state rep seat gave interesting answers to that question during a Thursday, March 10 forum held for the Democratic candidates running for the seat. Check out the adjacent video to see what they said.  The forum included Waltham City Councilor Gary Marchese, Watertown Town Councilor John Lawn and Newton Alderman Allan Ciccone. The father of Sean Durkee, a Democrat, represented his son, who could not attend because he had a prior commitment.
