Newton Rabbi Reportedly Mulling Run for Senate

A special election will be held later this year to replace Sen. John Kerry, who is likely to be appointed secretary of state.

Newton resident and Rabbi Jonah Pesner is reportedly considering a run for U.S. Senate in a special election that will likely be held later this year after Sen. John Kerry is appointed secretary of state. Pesner, a Democrat, has started "exploratory conversations" for the Senate seat, according to David Bernstein's Boston Phoenix "Talking Politics" blog. Pesner is the senior vice president of the national Union for Reform Judaism, a former congregational rabbi at Temple Israel and the founding chair of JOIN for Justice, the blog reports. He also served a leadership role in the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization during its campaign for health care reform.
