Exactly a month after the Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee broke ground on the site, crews have started construction of the local memorial that honors the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Newton Sept. 11 Memorial is located in front of Newton Fire Headquarters on Centre Street in Newton Centre. Along with "perennial grasses, spring bulbs and flowers," the memorial will include several elements representing the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the flight path of United Airlines Flight 93. A piece of steel from the World Trade Center will also be incorporated into the design. The city of Newton will hold two ceremonies tomorrow to mark the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Starting at 9:30 a.m., a ceremony will be held on the War Memorial steps outside City Hall, according to a press release issued by the mayor's office today. After 18 months of planning, outreach and fundraising, the Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee officially has a groundbreaking date for its memorial to honor the eight people Newton lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The committee will break ground on the new memorial next month during a ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012. The Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee is hoping for a groundbreaking of Sept. 11, 2012.
A memorial that will honor Newton 9/11 victims has taken another big step forward. According to a press release issued last week by the Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee, the city and committee have signed an agreement that finalized the siting, installation and landscaping for the Newton 9/11 Memorial. Mayor Setti Warren, Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee Chair Sande Young, Newton Fire Chief Bruce Proia and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Bob DeRubeis signed the agreement on July 26. The family of Mark Bavis issued a letter Wednesday addressing their settlement with United Airlines and how a federal judge "gutted" their case.
Following news that they recently reached a settlement with United Airlines and its security contractor, the family of a local 9/11 victim issued a public statement today. The Bavis family, of Roslindale, had been fighting to bring their case to a federal district court. Their son, Mark Bavis of Newton, was a hockey scout for Los Angeles Kings and was traveling to the west coast when the plane he was on crashed into the second tower on Sept. 11, 2001. The Boston Globe reported Monday that the family reached a settlement with United Airlines.
Just over a week after the country marked the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the family of a local 9/11 victim reached a settlement with United Airlines. According to the Boston Globe, who reported the settlment Monday, the family of Mark Bavis was the "lone holdout" among families of victims who were offered compensation or lawsuit settlements. The Globe reported that the family did not disclose the settlement amount they reached with the airline and its security contractor.
