With powerhouse Elizabeth Warren taking all the attention in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary, the AP is reporting Khazei will drop out of the race Thursday.
Updated 10/27, 9:15 a.m. The Associated Press is reporting this evening that Alan Khazei will announce tomorrow he is dropping out of the race for U.S. Senate. According to the AP (posted here on WBUR), a spokesperson for Khazei confirmed that the Brookline resident and City Year co-founder will officially withdraw tomorrow, as the dynamic of the race has changed with the addition of Elizabeth Warren. In an email to Patch, Khazei's campaign says he will hold a press conference tomorrow at noon "to discuss his campaign for U.S. Senate." The press conference will take place at 201 South St. in Boston. Warren, an attorney and former Harvard law professor, has been the favored contender for Scott Brown since she announced her candidacy in …

“I’m supporting Alan because he knows how to bring people from different backgrounds together to get things done,” Sen. Creem said in a press release today.
Alan Khazei's campaign announced Tuesday afternoon that State Senator Cindy Creem (D-Newton) has endorsed Khazei's run for U.S. Senate. Creem is scheduled to campaign for Khazei at a house party tomorrow night at the home of Newton Ward 8 School Committee member Margie Ross-Decter, according to Khazei's campaign. "I believe Alan’s the best person to represent us in Washington because his life has been about going around barriers to find new and innovative ways to improve the lives of ordinary Americans," Creem said in a press release issued today by Khazei's campaign. "Whether it was the time he co-founded City Year to create 15,000 jobs for young people or the time he led a coalition of citizen groups to get a bi-partisan group of …

A look at candidates who hope to challenge U.S. Sen. Scott Brown — and how much money they've raised so far.
With speculation this week about whether Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren might join the race to become Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 2012, Patch decided to check in on the candidates who have already declared their interest in unseating Scott Brown. Although the primary is more than a year away, a bevy of at least six candidates has been campaigning hard. But will the door-to-door, town-to-town campaigning actually work and bring back Brown's seat to the Democrats? Some of the candidates say they have the start they need to do just that. "We believe this is a strong start for a first-time statewide candidate," said Setti Warren's press secretary Chuck Gilboy. He said the Newton mayor has raised more than $122,000 since …

The Democrat will be at the Auburndale Community Library at 7:30 p.m.
As we mentioned in the Five Things You Need to Know Today, U.S. Senate Candidate Herb Robinson will meet with the Newton Democratic City Committee (NDCC) tonight at the Auburndale Community Library to talk about his campaign to unseat Scott Brown. Robinson, who lives in Newton and is a NDCC member, specifies on his website that he is not a politician but an engineer with more than 30 years experience in private industry. He graduated from Cornell University and currently works at Stratus Technologies. The "socially liberal and fiscally conservative" candidate covers a wide range of issues on his site, including concerns over nuclear power and the need for leadership at a time when the country is in a "crisis." The Newton Democratic City …

Stop by and meet with the U.S. Senate Candidate at the Auburndale Community Library.
Similar to the events held with U.S. Senate candidates Bob Massie and Alan Khazei, the Newton Democratic City Committee (NDCC) is holding a "coffee with the candidates" tonight with U.S. Senate Candidate Marisa DeFranco. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Auburndale Community Library, 375 Auburn St. A Middleton resident and Salem-based immigration attorney, DeFranco announced her bid in late March. According to her website, DeFranco is running "to ensure that every American have the opportunity and the very access to that American Dream" and to "to put the government back in the hands of the people." Newton Mayor Setti Warren announced his bid for the U.S. Senate seat early last month. NDCC Vice-Chair Shawn Fitzgibbons …

Alan Khazei makes his case for becoming the man to beat U.S. Sen. Scott Brown.
Newton is Alan Khazei's kind of crowd. The crowd of more than 75 people posed articulate questions with progressive (or liberal) views to the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate at an open meeting of the Newton Democratic City Committee. The Brookline social entrepreneur talked a lot about Republican Scott Brown, but he only mentioned fellow challenger and Newton Mayor Setti Warren once: "My pitch is, let's keep Setti as mayor..." His comment drew a round of audience applause. Khazei, the co-founder of City Year and a big booster of community service, started by saying he loved that the gathering was held in the Auburndale Community Library — which is kept open only with volunteers and donations. Khazei asked audience members what they felt …

Khazei will meet with the Newton Democratic City Committee.
As we mentioned in our Five Things You Need to Know Today Senate Candidate Alan Khazei is visiting the Newton Democratic City Committee tonight at the Auburndale Community Library, 375 Auburn St. Khazei, who currently lives in Brookline, is the co-founder of City Year and, according to his website, launched the non-profit Be the Change, Inc. He ran as a candidate during the special Senate primary in 2009. The "coffee with the candidates" event featured a similar meet-and-greet with Democratic Senate candidate Bob Massie last week. Massie, a Somerville resident who ran for lieutenant governor in 1994, focused on Scott Brown during his meet-and-greet, rather than his primary opponents. A few Newton Democrats at the Massie event last week …
