Newton Mayor, Lt. Governor Open 'First of its Kind' Veterans Center

The center is located at American Legion Post 440 in Newton.

Local and state officials recently joined Mayor Setti Warren for the launch of a new Veterans Center at American Legion Post 440 in Newton.  The regional center aims to give veterans of all generations and branches of service a "one-stop location" for information on education, job opportunities, housing, childcare, taxes, finances and health advice, according to a press release issued by the mayor's office.  The center will also offer a place for local vets to network and socialize. “When I became mayor, I knew that we had to find new and creative ways to reach out to the roughly 7,000 veterans living in our community and ensure that they have access to quality services,” Warren, an Iraq War veteran, said in a statement. “In collaboration …

PHOTOS: Memorial Day Ceremonies Honor Newton Veterans

Members of American Legion Post 440, family members, and residents remembered those who gave their lives for their country during a series of memorial services throughout Newton and Nonantum Sunday morning, May 27, in observation of Memorial Day.

For many of us, the parks, bridges, and intersections we pass every day are simply that: ordinary places that make up our community. Yet many of places bear greater meaning, carrying on the names and memories of fellow Newtonians who gave their lives defending their nation. To remember and honor these heroes, members of American Legion Post 440 led a series of memorial services throughout Newton and Nonantum Sunday morning, a tradition they perform each Memorial Day weekend.

The Cold Spring Park summer farmers' market opened for the season yesterday and will run every Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. - 6 p.m.

It's officially summer in Newton when the produce stands line up at Cold Spring Park. Yesterday was the first day for the Tuesday summer farmers' market, which runs from 1:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Cold Spring.  Market Manager Judy Dore said the Tuesday market is welcoming a new farmer and baker as well as knife sharpening by On the Edge sharpening. The sharpening will be available at the July 12 market from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Dore recommends asking about appointments.  A Friday summer market is also held at the American Legion Post 440 on California Street in Nonantum. Newton in the Kitchen

Spring for Some Local Produce (and More)

This week marks the first time Newton has a spring Farmers' Market. I visited it opening day to see what sorts of foodstuffs Newtonites could enjoy in their kitchens

As our intrepid editor, Melanie Graham, showed you in her pictorial piece Wednesday, there is a new spring Farmers’ Market here in Newton. Held on Tuesdays at Post 440 in Nonantum (where the Friday Farmers’ Market will be held come summer), the number of vendors is expected to grow as new produce comes into season and more craftspeople make their wares available for sale. But right now, the market is chock-full of wonderful produce, seafood, poultry and treats.   Grilled Tilapia Piccata with Orzo (serves 4) Ingredients: Zest of 1 lemon and juice of 2 lemons 1/2 cup dry vermouth 1 shallot, thinly sliced Splash heavy cream 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes, at room temperature Salt and pepper to taste 4 (8-ounce) tilapia fillets …

Photo Gallery: Newton Welcomes New Spring Farmers' Market

The spring market will run on Tuesdays from noon-5 p.m. at Post 440 in Nonantum.

A new tradition started in Nonantum yesterday: a spring farmers' market.  The market, which runs from noon-5 p.m. on Tuesdays, is an extension of The Garden City's summer farmers' markets.  Familiar faces could be spotted at yesterday's grand opening as well as some new vendors. A group of crafters, a new offering at the spring markets, set up tables with unique jewelry, pendants and hand-blown glass.  The spring farmers' market will run until June 28. The summer farmers' markets, which take place at Cold Spring Park on Tuesdays and Post 440 on Fridays, begin the first Tuesday after the Fourth of July. The summer market runs through the end of October.  For more information on the markets, contact Dore at jdore@newtonma.gov.
