You Ask, Patch Answers: Where to Ice Skate in Newton

Weather may be a bit warm this week, but skating will be available if temperatures cool off.

This week may not feel like prime skating weather, but a few of Newton's ice rinks are set up and just waiting for the temperature to dip below freezing.  The city currently has four areas to skate: Auburndale Cove, Hyde Community Center, Lower Falls Community Center and the Newton Centre Green.  The Lower Falls rink is open, weather permitting. During yesterday's ribbon cutting at the community center, Newton Patch spotted a pair skating on the rink (see photo to the right). Over in Newton Highlands, the Hyde Community Center Rink is also open (weather permitting), according to a post on the Village 14 blog. Improvements Coming to Purgatory Cove in Newton/Waltham

Purgatory Cove in Waltham and Newton to have vegetation removed.

If all goes according to plan, Purgatory Cove on the Waltham/Newton line will be rid of overgrown vegetation by this summer. The state Department of Conservation and Recreation plans to start removing the vegetation at the cove this coming May, according to Waltham City Councilor Stephen Rourke. DCR officials will to monitor the cove, which connects to Auburndale Cove, over the next several years and possibly perform chemical treatments. Hopefully, the work will open the cove for boating and fishing again, Rourke said. An informational meeting will be held in Waltham tonight at 6:30 p.m. to present the project to neighborhood residents.
