Tigers Bounced From Playoffs

Newton North loses to Mansfield, 48-46 in the South Div. 1 finals.

The upset was there to be had, but in the end, the Newton North boys basketball team just could not finish. With an eight-point fourth quarter lead, the seventh-seeded Tigers controlled their destiny. But Newton North hit a cold streak allowing No. 1 Mansfield to gain the upper hand, and eventually, take the 48-46 victory in the Div. 1 South Sectional final last night at the TD Garden in Boston. “I’m devastated,” said Newton North head coach Paul Connolly. “We were so close. We battled all-year long. We’ve come together. We made some big plays in the game. We stretched the lead a little bit and then we stopped scoring.” With the defeat, the Tigers' season ends at 19-7. The Hornets, meanwhile, improve to 24-2 and advance to the state semi-…

Lions Girls Basketball Knocked Out Of Tournament

Newton South ends a historic 21-2 season with a 47-45 loss to Mansfield.

For most Lion players, the tears commenced as time expired and it continued to flow as they streamed out of the locker room one by one after the coach spoke. This was a heartbreaking loss for the Newton South girls basketball team. The third-seeded Lions appeared to be in control of the Div. 1 South Sectional semi-final game after tallying a 19-point advantage at halftime. But Newton South could only muster four third-quarter points in what turned out to be an abysmal offensive half leading to a 47-45 loss to No. 2 Mansfield. “I could have made a few adjustments,” said Lions head coach Sam Doner. “I’m sure when I get home I won’t sleep tonight and think about what I could have done differently. One possession, two possessions, would have …

Bikofsky's Threes Once Again Give Lions Life

Newton South defeats Taunton, 64-57, to advance to the semi-finals.

For the second March night, the Newton South girls basketball team’s playoff life hinged on the three-point shot. And once again, the clutch shooter was Sophie Bikofsky, who netted four fourth-quarter three-pointers en route to the Lions 64-57 win over No. 11 Taunton in the Div. 1 South Sectional tournament.   “She is one of the best shooters I’ve ever seen in New England,” said Newton South head coach Sam Doner. “I’ve been training a lot of kids in my life and I’ve seen a lot of great shooters. Shooters keep shooting—open, if you’re not open, shoot the ball. She started losing confidence in the first half, starting gaining it in the second half.” The third-seeded Lions (21-1) now advance to the semi-finals where they will play No. 2 …

Teamwork Propels Newton North Boys Basketball to Quarterfinals

The Tigers defeat North Attleboro, 62-51.

Individuals win scoring records, teams win titles. The Newton North boys basketball squad is on its way to validating that maxim after a team effort led to a 62-51 victory last night over No. 10 North Attleboro in the Div. 1 South Sectional tournament. The cohesive play was epitomized by the fact that the seventh-seeded Tigers had three scorers net double digits in the contest: Luke Westman (18 points), Aaron Falzon (17 points), and Avi Adler-Cohen (13 points). “Our guys did a great job,” said Newton North head coach Paul Connolly. “We had a game plan. We prepared for these guys. They can really shoot the ball.” He added later, “It was a good team victory for us.” With the triumph, the Tigers (17-6) advance to the quarterfinals where they …

Bikofsky's Threes Help Lions Advance to Quarterfinals

Newton South defeats Brockton, 67-53.

Move over Ray Allen, there’s a new three-point sharp shooter in town, and her name is Sophie Bikofsky. The senior Lion drained five first-half three-pointers helping guide the No. 3 Newton South girls basketball team to victory over No. 19 Brockton, 67-53, in the first round of the Div. 1 South Sectional tournament. “We talked about that from day one, about when someone has the hot hand, keep giving them the ball,” said Lions head coach Sam Doner. “Not only did they give her the ball at the right spots, she ran to the right spots. She moved without the ball extremely well.” Newton South bounced back from its only loss of the year—a 73-70 overtime defeat to Central Catholic to end the regular season—with a triumph that advances the team to …
