The week will feature events highlighting alternate modes of transportation.
Planes, trains and automobiles? How about bicycles, MBTA trains and walking routes? The city of Newton will be promoting alternate modes of transportation during its first ever Walk/Bike Week from September 28 - October 5. Throughout the Newton Walk/Bike Week, the city will offer a number of events, activities and workshops focused on getting residents out of their cars. The free map, produced by Bike Newton, helps outline trails and routes for cyclists of all skill levels.
Thanks to work by Bike Newton, local cyclists now have a comprehensive guide to all the bike routes, trails and city resources in the first-ever Newton Bike Map. Complete with information on off-road paths and Newton's two bike lanes, the free bike map outlines routes based on skill level. It also marks the safety level of intersections and includes markers for local bike shops, T stations, grocery stores and farmers markets. “The hope is that this map will help people do errands, get to schools, parks and other city destinations by bike,” Bike Newton President Helen Rittenberg said in a press release. The organization announced this week that Bike Newton will hold organized commuter rides to Boston on Fridays in September.
Own a bike? Try skipping the highway commute next month and head to work with Bike Newton. Starting September 9, Bike Newton will hold Boston commute rides on Fridays in September. The 12-mile ride starts at Newton City Hall and runs via Watertown Street and the Charles River Bike Path, eventually ending at the Esplanade in Boston. Check out a map of the route here. The dates of the rides are September 9, 23 and 30 and will be lead by Shawn Fitzgibbons. Rides start at 7:45 a.m. sharp and riders of all levels are invited, with no need to RSVP.
