Somerville's Bob Massie is the second Democrat to drop out of contention.
Bob Massie this morning announced he is dropping out of the race to challenge Republican Scott Brown for his U.S. Senate seat. Massie is the first candidate to follow Newton Mayor Setti Warren in leaving the race. Warren dropped out last week, saying, "I did not see a clear path to victory." Massie said his reason for dropping out was the vastly changed recent dynamics of the race. "Politics is about having a real sense of vision about what could happen — but also about realism," Massie said in a phone call to Patch. Harvard Law Prof. Elizabeth Warren jumped into the race earlier in September, and has since been the heavy favorite in voter polls. Massie participated in the first debate of all the candidates on Tuesday at UMass-Lowell. …

A look at candidates who hope to challenge U.S. Sen. Scott Brown — and how much money they've raised so far.
With speculation this week about whether Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren might join the race to become Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 2012, Patch decided to check in on the candidates who have already declared their interest in unseating Scott Brown. Although the primary is more than a year away, a bevy of at least six candidates has been campaigning hard. But will the door-to-door, town-to-town campaigning actually work and bring back Brown's seat to the Democrats? Some of the candidates say they have the start they need to do just that. "We believe this is a strong start for a first-time statewide candidate," said Setti Warren's press secretary Chuck Gilboy. He said the Newton mayor has raised more than $122,000 since …

The Democrat will be at the Auburndale Community Library at 7:30 p.m.
As we mentioned in the Five Things You Need to Know Today, U.S. Senate Candidate Herb Robinson will meet with the Newton Democratic City Committee (NDCC) tonight at the Auburndale Community Library to talk about his campaign to unseat Scott Brown. Robinson, who lives in Newton and is a NDCC member, specifies on his website that he is not a politician but an engineer with more than 30 years experience in private industry. He graduated from Cornell University and currently works at Stratus Technologies. The "socially liberal and fiscally conservative" candidate covers a wide range of issues on his site, including concerns over nuclear power and the need for leadership at a time when the country is in a "crisis." The Newton Democratic City …

Stop by and meet with the U.S. Senate Candidate at the Auburndale Community Library.
Similar to the events held with U.S. Senate candidates Bob Massie and Alan Khazei, the Newton Democratic City Committee (NDCC) is holding a "coffee with the candidates" tonight with U.S. Senate Candidate Marisa DeFranco. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Auburndale Community Library, 375 Auburn St. A Middleton resident and Salem-based immigration attorney, DeFranco announced her bid in late March. According to her website, DeFranco is running "to ensure that every American have the opportunity and the very access to that American Dream" and to "to put the government back in the hands of the people." Newton Mayor Setti Warren announced his bid for the U.S. Senate seat early last month. NDCC Vice-Chair Shawn Fitzgibbons …

Khazei will meet with the Newton Democratic City Committee.
As we mentioned in our Five Things You Need to Know Today Senate Candidate Alan Khazei is visiting the Newton Democratic City Committee tonight at the Auburndale Community Library, 375 Auburn St. Khazei, who currently lives in Brookline, is the co-founder of City Year and, according to his website, launched the non-profit Be the Change, Inc. He ran as a candidate during the special Senate primary in 2009. The "coffee with the candidates" event featured a similar meet-and-greet with Democratic Senate candidate Bob Massie last week. Massie, a Somerville resident who ran for lieutenant governor in 1994, focused on Scott Brown during his meet-and-greet, rather than his primary opponents. A few Newton Democrats at the Massie event last week …

Some Newton residents showed concern over Mayor Warren's run during a Newton City Democratic Committee meeting, but Bob Massie says the focus should be on Scott Brown.
Since announcing his intent to run in the Senate primary next year, Newton Mayor Setti Warren has received large amounts of media attention. But at a meeting of the city Democratic committee Wednesday night, one of Warren's prospective primary opponents told Newton Democrats that the real focus needed to be on Sen. Scott Brown and his record. "The longer he's been in office, the more absurd I thought his votes and his comments were," Massie said. He pointed to Brown's "proud" opposition of health care reform as evidence that the Republican was not a good representation of Massachusetts voters' values, despite his perceived support and populist appeal. "If [Democrats] think it's important, we can beat the truck. We can beat the barn jacket…
