The Tigers defeated No. 7 Brockton tonight 3-0.
Following in the footsteps of their South-side counterparts, the Newton North boys volleyball team defeated Brockton tonight in a quarterfinal game for the MIAA south sectional tournament. The No. 2-ranked Tigers took down No. 7 Brockton 3-0 in the home match, winning game one 25-8, game two 25-8 and game three 25-20. With tonight's win, the Tigers will move on to play in a semi-final match this Thursday at 7 p.m. They will face the winner of the No. 3 North Quincy and No. 6 New Bedford game, which is being played tonight in North Quincy. The Lions also play a semi-final match on Thursday, facing top-seeded Barnstable in Barnstable at 6:30 p.m. Tune in to Newton Patch tomorrow morning for full game story from tonight.

Newton South defeats Brockton, 67-53.
Move over Ray Allen, there’s a new three-point sharp shooter in town, and her name is Sophie Bikofsky. The senior Lion drained five first-half three-pointers helping guide the No. 3 Newton South girls basketball team to victory over No. 19 Brockton, 67-53, in the first round of the Div. 1 South Sectional tournament. “We talked about that from day one, about when someone has the hot hand, keep giving them the ball,” said Lions head coach Sam Doner. “Not only did they give her the ball at the right spots, she ran to the right spots. Newton North won Sunday's game 62-49.
As coach Paul Connolly said, the Newton North boys basketball team was "in the zone" last night. "I thought our guys held their composure, we made our free throws and we rebounded well tonight," Connolly said after Newton North's win against Brockton Sunday. "That's a terrific win against a really really good basketball team." The Tigers took down their out-of-league opponents 62-49 Sunday and Aaron Falzon lead the team with 16 points on the night. According to Boston.com high school sports stats, Newton North now improves to 11-4 overall. Brockton falls to 9-4.
