VIDEO: Newton Aldermen Honor Carleton Merrill with Memorial Resolution

Ward 1 Alderman-at-Large Carleton Merrill passed away on Jan. 23, 2013.

The Newton Board of Alderman Monday night filed a memorial resolution honoring their colleague, Ward 1 Alderman-at-Large Carleton Merrill, who passed away on January 23 at the age of 88. Born and raised in Newton, Merrill graduated from Newton High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Merrill was first elected as the Newton Ward 1 Alderman-at-Large in 1950 and served one term before taking a few years off. In 1956, he rejoined the board and was elected to serve another three terms before becoming the city's veterans and licensing agent in 1962. After 33 years as Newton's veterans and licensing agent, Merrill retired in 1995 and was reelected to the Ward 1 Alderman-at-Large seat in 1996, where he served …

Newton Election Commission Recommendation: No Special Election for Alderman Merrill's Seat

The Board of Aldermen will have to send a petition to the state legislature requesting the city forego a special election for the seat.

The Newton Election Commission decided Friday afternoon not to move forward with a special election for the vacant Ward 1 alderman-at-large seat and instead, wait until the general municipal election in November to fill the spot on the Newton Board of Aldermen.  Interim Election Commission Executive Secretary Peter Koutoujian Sr. told Newton Patch that the election commissioners have docketed an item recommending the Board of Aldermen vote to forego the special election, which will require the board to petition the state legislature.  The Ward 1 at-large seat was vacated late last month after the death of Alderman Carleton Merrill, who passed away on Jan. 23 at the age of 88.  Last week, Koutoujian told Newton Patch the potential special …

Obituary: Carleton P. Merrill, 88, Newton Alderman and World War II Vet

Services for Merrill will be held next Monday and Tuesday in Newton.

Carleton P. Merrill, 88, a lifelong Newton resident, passed away on Jan. 23, 2012. Born and raised in Newton, Merrill graduated from Newton High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, according to his obituary posted on the Eaton Funeral Homes website.  Merrill was first elected as the Newton Ward 1 Alderman-at-Large in 1950 and served one term before taking a few years off. In 1956, he rejoined the board and was elected to serve another three terms before becoming the city's veterans and licensing agent in 1962. Funeral Arrangements for Newton Alderman Carleton Merrill

Merrill was first elected to the Newton Board of Aldermen in 1950 and previously served as the city's veterans and licensing agent.

Funeral services and arrangements have been made for Newton Ward 1 Alderman-at-Large Carleton Merrill, who passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at the age of 88. A wake will be held on Monday, Jan. 28 from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home on Centre Street in Newton Corner.  A funeral for Merrill will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. at the Newton Cemetery Chapel on Walnut Street in Newton Centre. Merrill was a lifelong Newton resident who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was first elected to the Newton Board of Aldermen in 1950 and worked as the city's veterans and licensing agent for many years.  The Newtonville Avenue resident served the city and region in a number of different positions …

Carleton Merrill was one of the most decent individuas that I have ever met. I first met Carleton when I was elected to the Board of Aldermen in 1973 and he was the Veterans' Service and Licensing Department head. One of Newton's most dedicated public servants, Ward 1 Alderman-at-Large Carleton Merrill, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013.  Merrill was a lifelong Newton resident who served tours in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was first elected to the Newton Board of Aldermen in 1950 and worked as the city's veterans and licensing agent for many years.  The Newtonville Avenue resident served the city and region in a number of different positions including former commissioner for the Scouts of America, member of a cancer patient support group at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, member of the Newton Advisory Committee and Nonantum Advisory Committee and former chairman of the West Suburban Division of the American Heart Association.
