The AMC cinema in Chestnut Hill has officially closed up shop, making way for a new Showcase Super Lux slated to move in just a few doors down. The five-screen Chestnut Hill movie theatre closed its doors on Thursday, Jan. 17, according to representatives from WS Development, the owner and operator of The Street (formerly the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center). A sign had been posted on the theatre's marquee announcing its closure, but has since been taken down. Although he did not comment on the future of the theatre building, WS Development Corporate Marking Director David Fleming told Newton Patch this week that the AMC space will be included in the continued redevelopment of the shopping center. The owners of Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse are partnering with National Amusements to open a 250-seat restaurant in the new cinema complex at the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center, according to a report in the Boston Herald. The new restaurant, which will be known as Davio's Cucina, will include a lower-priced menu of pastas and pizzas as well as a full bar, the Herald reported. The Chestnut Hill Shopping Center is now on solid footing; the basement and part of the foundation of the site have been poured. In an email sent yesterday, WS Development's Corporate Marketing Director David Fleming said about 10,000 cubic yards of concrete were poured on Tuesday, to create the basement and foundation of the 115,000 square-foot building that will eventually house Sports Club/LA and a National Amusements Cinema De Lux. Sports Club/LA is expected to open in winter, and the movie theatre in the late winter or early spring. The former site of the Rugged Bear will eventually house a Shake Shack and Pinkberry. In a small way I will miss the AMC. not as much as I miss the General Cinema that was there prior. General was a locally owned company and was good for Newton to have it's offices here. AMC, not so much. The incoming Showcase is also a local organization and it will be good to have a local business (HQ in Dedham) back in that spot. My only concern will be the pricing structure.
