VIDEO: Tear it Down: Demolition Begins at Former Macy's in Newton

Site of former Macy's in Chestnut Hill demolished to make way for The Sports Club/LA and National Amusements theatre.

Cranes began tearing down the former Macy's building on Route 9 shortly after 10 a.m. today.  The former Chestnut Hill Macy's, which closed a little over a year ago, will be replaced with an athletic store and a cinema, according to WS Development. WS Development Director of Corporate Marketing David Fleming announced that the space will be filled with a new National Amusements theatre and a Sports Club/LA. The store is expected to open in winter 2012, and the theatre in the late winter 2012 or early spring 2013.  He explained new theatre would result in the closing of the AMC Chestnut Hill, which is a few doors down in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. They do not have a time table for the closure, but it will remain open until shortly …

Newton Macy's Could be the Site of New Movie Theatre

WS Development is proposing a plan to close the AMC Chestnut Hill and reopen a new theatre at the former Macy's site, which closed last year.

A Chestnut Hill development firm has some makeover plans for the Macy's on Route 9 in Newton.  Boston.com recently reported the now closed department store could soon be converted into a movie theatre.  According to the article, WS Development, the property's owners, have started removing asbestos from the former Macy's building and have plans to start construction as soon as next month.  The owners indicated that the new theatre would result in the closing of the AMC Chestnut Hill, which is a few doors down in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. WS Development would not disclose the new theatre company.  Macy's closed its Chestnut Hill store in early 2011 as part of the company's move to "prune underperforming locations while also opening …

Despite Economic Climate, Newton Malls Prep for Tax-Free Weekend

Many Newton retailers are ready for the crowds this weekend, but will they come?

In years past, a tax-free weekend in Massachusetts meant mobs of people and packed parking lots filled with shoppers ready to save money. But with the current economic climate, will crowds this year fill the stores to save their 6.25 percent? "No one is really sure how this weekend will play out," said David Fleming, the corporate marketing director for WS Development, owners of the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. "We expect it to be a good one, but we're not sure with the recent economic news." Fleming explained that stores with higher-end merchandise are likely to see more customers, such as the upscale houseware store Portobello Road. Just next door at Eyespot, the boutique eyewear store will be offering tax-free deals on some unique …

Newton Aldermen Delay Vote on Contract Funding, Approve Shopping Center Plans

The full board voted Monday night to post pone its vote on union contracts and whether it will send the item back to Finance Committee.

The Newton Board of Aldermen Monday night decided to push back its vote to transfer funds for municipal and police contracts as it waits on more information regarding the Group Insurance Commission (GIC) and how it could play into city finances.  Alderman Ted Hess-Mahan, who proposed the discussion, argued that now is a good time for the city to discuss the possibility of joining the GIC, as the teachers' association has yet to reach a contract deal and the municipal employee deals were recently ratified.  The GIC, which places cities and towns into the state's health insurance pool, would be an alternative to the city adjusting its own health insurance options including co-pays and deductables. "I think now would be an opportune time to …

If the numbers are in the same general ballpark, I believe maintaining local control (being self insured) for current and retired city employees is the better option. Obviously, if the costs are far different that’s another story. According to the city charter, the actual terms contained in labor contracts are under the mayor’s control. We do not need 24 mini-mayors, but the funding requires BOA …   more ›

Newton Aldermen Set to Discuss Chestnut Hill Shopping Center Plans

The full board will discuss tonight plans to renovate and expand the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center.

Following last month's approval by the Land Use Committee, the full Board of Aldermen tonight (August 8) will discuss and vote on plans to expand and renovate the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center.  The project, which is being proposed by the Chestnut Hill firm WS Developments, includes plans to knock down part of the shopping center and rebuild a three-story, mixed-use structure. The new structure would sit at 33 Boylston St., where Century Bank and City Sports is located now, in between The Container Store and Legal Sea Foods.  The proposal also includes plans to revamp the shopping area's carriage way and pedestrian access.  Despite the unanimous approval from Land Use, some aldermen still have concerns over the traffic and parking …

Committee Gives Go-Ahead for Shopping Center Project Despite Traffic Concerns

Land Use committee gives unanimous approval to Chestnut Hill Shopping Center's planned renovations, despite concerns.

W.S. Development's proposed revamp of the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center won the unanimous support of Newton's Land Use Committee this week, though aldermen voiced concerns about traffic and parking problems that could be caused by the project's success. The Land Use committee voted 7-0 Tuesday night to grant several necessary approvals to the Chestnut Hill Developer's plan to replace the building that currently houses Century Bank and City Sports with a three-story multi-function (office and retail) building. The plan needed board approval to build a multi-story building, rezone the Route 9 carriageway for potential angled parking in front of the building, and waive requirements to build additional parking to handle the increased volume …

Shopping Center, Country Club Plans Up for Discussion Tonight in Land Use

The Land Use Committee will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in room 222 at City Hall.

Following last month's public hearing and presentation, WS Development Associates will be before the Board of Aldermen's Land Use Committee again tonight to discuss their proposed renovations and expansion of the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center.  The project, which will be discussed during a committee working session tonight, includes plans to take down part of a building at the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center and in its place, re-build a three-story, mixed-use structure. Taking the place of the building that currently houses Century Bank and City Sports, the new building would include space for those existing tenants as well as additional retail, restaurant and office space. WS Development also plans to relocate their headquarters to the …

Chestnut Hill Shopping Center Plan Excites Tenants, Local Businesses

Locals say developers' proposed three-story building would bring needed improvements to Route 9 shopping.

Local businesses are saying a proposed building redevelopment in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center would be a welcome improvement. Both a current tenant of the building where the proposed development would take place and neighboring businesses say that the three-story multi-purpose commercial building would help bring energy the shopping center has lost since the departure of Macy's and the Rugged Bear. (Read stories on the departure of Macy's here, and the Rugged Bear here.) The plan, proposed by Chestnut Hill-based development firm WS Development, would remove sections of the building that currently house the Century Bank and City Sports and replacing it with a three-story mixed-use development. The new building would feature ground-…

Developer Proposes New Building, Improvements at Chestnut Hill Shopping Center

The proposal includes a three-story building on the site where Century Bank and City Sports sits now.

Six months after special permits were approved for the proposed Chestnut Hill Square project, developers just down the street from that site are looking to renovate and expand another shopping center on Route 9. Representatives from WS Development, a Chestnut Hill-based development firm, presented its plans last night to take down part of a building at the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center and in its place, re-build a three-story, mixed-use structure. The presentation came during a public hearing held before both the Land Use Committee and the Planning Board. Robert Frazier, the firm's Senior Vice President of Development, explained that the firm will also look to improve the carriageway on the south side of the shopping center (closest to …

As Talbots Says Goodbye to Chestnut Hill, Other Shopping Areas Plan Expansion

The Chestnut Hill Shopping Center will be before the Land Use Committee tonight for a public hearing on potential expansion.

Adding its name to the list of recent store closings in Chestnut Hill, Talbots in the Mall at Chestnut Hill closed its doors earlier this month. Talbots Corporate Communications & Community Relations Director Betsy Thompson said in an e-mailed statement the clothing store chain closed down the Chestnut Hill location on June 11. The shut-down came with the company's plans to close 110 of its stores "as part of an ongoing effort to optimize the productivity of our retail stores." The Chestnut Hill location was closed, Thompson said, after the company did a "market by market analysis."  "We look forward to serving customers at one of our many stores throughout the Boston area," Thompson said in the e-mail. The majority of the 110 shore shut-…
