A handy online tool helps residents report coyote sightings in Newton and find out the location of past sightings.
When it comes to coyote hangouts, it seems West Newton is the place to be. According to an interactive map on the city's website, the majority of coyote sightings in Newton occur in the neighborhoods of West Newton and Auburndale. The map, which has sightings spanning from January 2012 to this week, shows more than 30 coyote sightings between Auburndale Avenue and Derby Street. The online tool also helps residents report coyote sightings from their home computer. Residents simply enter their name, email address, time and location of the sighting and the information is added to the map as well as a list of recent sightings. What do you do when you have a child who’s just like you?
There is a beautiful wild turkey that hangs out in a tall tree (yes, tree) in our back yard. He’s wandered the streets and yards of our neighborhood for almost two years now, somehow eluding the jaws of the Corey Hill Coyotes. He’s become so familiar with us he no longer puffs up at the bursts of loud sound forever emitting from our house. This turkey has a routine that brings him pecking at our back door several times a week. We love this. It’s so funny to see the turkey right there on our doorstep, politely knocking to gain entry. Of course the boys want to open the door, and even I considered it for a crazy moment, before I remembered… turkeys can be mean. Police say there have been some recent incidents in West Newton that they are investigating.
Residents have recently posted signs in the West Newton neighborhood warning of coyotes and foxes attacking pets, asking local residents to keep an eye on small cats and dogs. One sign was found on the corner of Webster Street and Waltham Street earlier this week. It reads: "Coyotes and foxes are praying on cats in Newton and surrounding areas. Many cats are missing. City Hall and Animal Control have ignored this very serious problem. Pets matter. They are great companions and a big part of a family. Please keep your cats and small dogs in and keep an eye on children." According to Newton Police Capt. Howard Mintz, a recent incident where a coyote attacked and killed a small dog in West Newton was "normal behavior" for a coyote. Mintz …

I nearly hit a wolf or coyote on rte 9 outside of where Milton's is located. It was just after midnight. I didn't see him until he was running in front of my car trying to get out of my way. He had to be running at least 45 mph in front of my car when I slammed on my brakes to avoid him.
