State prosecutors in Middlesex and Suffolk counties announced today they have terminated the case against a former Newton elementary school teacher charged with child porn and idecent assault. David Ettlinger, who taught for more than 10 years at Underwood and Peirce elementary schools, is currently serving a 45-year sentence in federal prison for charges stemming from his connection to an international child pornography site. According to a statement from the Middlesex and Suffolk district attorneys, prosecutors decided to drop the charges -- filed as "nolle prosequi" -- due to the lengthy prison sentence Ettlinger is serving, as well as the lifetime of supervision he will face after his release. Governor May Sign Bill to Expand Background Checks on Teachers, Bus Drivers
Last year, Newton Public Schools expanded its background check procedures after an elementary school teacher was arrested on child pornography charges.
The Associated Press is reporting Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is considering signing legislation that would require teachers and workers at child care centers as well as school bus drivers to submit fingerprints for criminal background checks. The fingerprint background checks would also apply to everyone seeking to adopt children or become foster parents, as the legislation is written. Fingerprints would be submitted to the Massachusetts State Police for a state criminal history check and forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a national criminal history check, reported the Associated Press. Former Newton Teacher Sentenced to 45 Years in Prison for Child Porn
David Ettlinger was a teacher at the Underwood and Peirce elementary schools in Newton.
Roughly a year after he was first arrested on child porn charges, former Newton elementary school teacher David Ettlinger was sentenced to 45 years in federal prison today for charges stemming from his connection to an international child pornography site. The sentencing came down today in a Louisiana federal court, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. In addition to his 45 years in federal prison, Ettlinger was also sentenced to a lifetime of supervision. Ettlinger pleaded guilty in August 2012 to one count of engaging in a child exploitation enterprise. Officials say Ettlinger was involved with the child pornography site known as Dreamboard. A former Newton teacher facing federal child pornography charges is scheduled to be sentenced in a Louisiana federal court today. According to an earlier report on YourTown Newton, federal court documents indicated Ettlinger's sentencing was pushed back to today, January 8, from its initial date in November. Ettlinger pleaded guilty in August 2012 to federal child pornography charges stemming from his connection to an international child pornography site. A former Newton teacher pleaded guilty today to federal child pornography charges stemming from his connection to an international child pornography site, the Boston Globe reported this afternoon. According to the Globe report, David Ettlinger pleaded guilty in a Louisiana federal court earlier today. He had been charged with engaging in a child exploitation enterprise, conspiracy to advertise the distribution of child pornography and conspiracy to distribute child porn. A former Newton elementary school teacher who faces multiple charges of child pornography possession and indecent assault may plead guilty in a Louisiana federal court. According to a report Wednesday in the Boston Herald, a lawyer for David Ettlinger told the court last week her client will enter a guilty plea. For a full report, check out the Herald story here. Concerns, Questions Raised by Parents in Wake of Child Porn Case
Several Newton parents have brought up concerns about complaints filed about former Newton teacher David Ettlinger, who is facing federal child porn charges.
A number of Newton parents have recently questioned the Newton Public Schools' response to complaints filed against former elementary school teacher David Ettlinger, who is facing state and federal child pornography charges. The Boston Globe reported this morning that a number of complaints were filed about Ettlinger's behavior at Underwood Elementary, including an instance where he reportedly kicked a student and another where he let a child sit on his lap during a field trip. Former Newton Teacher Headed to Federal Court for Child Porn Charges
A Suffolk Superior Court magistrate lowered Ettlinger's bail Tuesday morning to allow Ettlinger's federal case to proceed.
A former Newton elementary school teacher charged with child pornography possession and indecent assault and battery will now head to federal court. According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, a Suffolk Superior Court magistrate waived David Ettlinger's right to a speedy trial and reduced his bail in order for him to be detained by federal officials and face charges out of Louisiana. Ettlinger, 34, faces federal charges out of the Western District of Louisiana that stem from his alleged involvement with the global child pornography site known as "Dreamboard."
