VIDEO: Newton Restaurants, Retailers Honored with Business Excellence Awards

Awards were handed out to local businesses and citizens for their work in improving the vitality of Newton's villages and business community.

The city of Newton and the Newton Economic Development Commission (EDC) honored several local restaurants, retailers and community members Thursday night for their involvement in the growth and vitality of Newton's business community.  "I want to…acknowledge how important your business is here in Newton,” said Mayor Setti Warren. “Commerce is so important to the long-term success of Newton.” EDC Chair Christopher Steele handed out 11 awards recognizing nine local businesses, a local arts organization as well as a "citizen champion." What Do You Think About a 'Moratorium' on New Banks in Newton?

When we run our weekly Visions for Vacancies" column on Newton Patch, we ask our readers to weigh in on what they think should go in to empty storefronts and buildings in the Garden City.  And almost every week, someone will comment: "Not a bank!" Well, those readers may just get their wish. Recently, the city's Economic Development Commission (EDC) proposed a one-year "moratorium" on banks moving into the ground level of a building, unless a special permit is granted by the Board of Aldermen. The temporary measure aims to allow for more retail variety in business districts and therefore, bring more vitality to Newton's village centers. The problem is the owners and lessors who see banks as an easy source of high rents and the perceived "safety" of a long-term lease with no messiness. One site with numerous banks ATMs would solve most customers' needs without ruining the remaining character of our villages.   more ›

Nominations Sought for Newton Business Excellence Awards

The awards are spearheaded by the Newton Economic Development Commission.

Do you know an individual, business or organization that has had a positive impact on Newton's economic development? They could be a contender for a first-ever Newton Business Excellence Award.  Spearheaded by the Newton Economic Development Commission and Mayor Setti Warren, the awards aim to recognize those who have helped contribute to the vitality of Newton's village centers as well as improve the commercial community in the Garden City.  The awards, which were announced late last week, are open to businesses, organizations and individuals currently active in Newton.
