PHOTOS: Construction Progress at Newton's F.A. Day Middle School

A few photos from the Newton Public Schools highlighting the construction progress at F.A. Day Middle School.

During Monday night's Newton School Committee meeting, Newton Public Schools' Chief Operating Officer Mike Cronin provided a few photos to show the construction progress at F.A. Day Middle School. After months of infrastructure and utility work on the site, steel beams and concrete slabs have started going up at the school.  "Once the steel goes up, you can see the structure and how big it is...it's real and it's there," Cronin said. "The school is excited because they can see and feel it." Placement of the steel for the new classroom addition began on Jan. 24, 2013 and interior mechanical work for the new classrooms is underway, according to a facilities memo issued to the School Committee. When the project is completed, six new …

Newton School Committee Approves Measure to Send All Cabot Elementary Students to F.A. Day Middle

The School Committee approved the recommendation at its meeting Monday night, pending the passage of the override.

With a growing student population and fewer classroom spaces available at Bigelow Middle School, the Newton School Committee approved last night a measure that will send all Cabot Elementary School students to F.A. Day Middle School.  "Next year, if we continue our current enrollment patterns, we do not have enough space at Bigelow," Newton Superintendent David Fleishman said at last night's Newton School Committee meeting.  Currently, fifth graders leaving Cabot Elementary are split between F.A. Day and Bigelow, the city's two north side middle schools. Those two middle schools then feed into Newton North High School.  According to Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education Cynthia Bergan, this year's fifth grade class has 1021 …

Colantonio is a great construction company, and I'm glad to hear the work has moved forward. I'm a roofing contractor in Newton (www.olympicroofing.com/newton-ma-roofing), and we're hopeful that we will be awarded the roofing work for the school upon construction completion by Colantonio. Waiting on a final decision post-bidding process.   more ›

Newton School Committee Approves Design for F.A. Day Work

The design will now go to the Design Review Committee for consideration.

The Newton School Committee last night approved initial designs for additions and renovations to the crowded F.A. Day Middle School.  Although the plans are only at 50 percent design, they will now move forward to the city's Design Review Committee, who will take a look at the plans and offer suggestions during a meeting on Thursday. Next week, the design and proposal for $643,500 in design costs will move on to Board of Aldermen subcommittees.  Deputy Superintendent/Chief Administrative Officer Sandy Guryan reiterated the point that the $4.3-$4.8 million estimated cost for the project could potentially change after design is finished and bids come in to the city.  "We won’t know the final cost until we complete the design and reach the …

Aldermen Share Concerns About Funding for Facilities Projects

The School Committee provided updates on short- and long-term facilities projects in the Newton Public Schools.

During a joint meeting Thursday night between the Board of Aldermen and School Committee, the topic of funding sources for facilities work was a common theme throughout the evening.  With only $5 million set aside for the short-term facilities improvements at F.A. Day Middle School and three elementary schools, some aldermen shared concerns last night that the projects could come in over-budget without a source for the extra costs. To view a copy of last night's facilities presentation, click the .pdf to the right. As of last night, the proposed renovations and additions at F.A. Day Middle School come in at around $4.8 million, which includes $500,000 for a fully-equipped science classroom and renovated West entryway.  With another $1 …

Elementary Modulars, F.A. Day Expansion Plans Progressing this Summer

At last week's School Committee meeting, there was a lot of talk about facilities projects and how they are progressing.

It's a busy season for the Newton Public Schools and facilities projects aimed at improving the classroom experience for a rapidly-growing student population. "We've got a lot going on this summer with facilities," said Deputy Superintendent/Chief Administrative Officer Sandy Guryan at last week's School Committee meeting. After receiving approval from the School Committee, Programs & Services and Public Facilities Subcommittees as well as the Finance Committee and Board of Aldermen, the four modular classrooms proposed for three elementary schools are on the track for going out to bid this week. The bids for the modular classrooms are set to go out this Friday, July 29, Guryan said at the July 19 School Committee meeting.  Aldermen …

Timeline: F.A. Day Middle School Construction

School is hoping renovations will be complete by Sept. 2012.

As the School Committee considers modular classrooms at three elementary schools, it's also keeping tabs on progress of permanent construction plans at F.A. Day Middle School. At Monday night's special School Committee meeting, Deputy Superintendent/Chief Administrative Officer Sandy Guryan and Building Commissioner Stephanie Gilman informed the committee that the city is on track to choosing a firm for F.A. Day construction designs.  After nine firms submitted bids, Gilman said four were selected for interviews, which were held Tuesday. Three finalists will be submitted to the mayor, who will award the final bid.  Once on board, Guryan said the designer will look at previous options presented to the committee, complete construction …

School Committee Delays Vote Again, Discusses Bleak Financial Forecast

The School Department could face up to a $5 million budget gap in fiscal 2012.

School Committee last night decided to further delay a vote that could expand facilities at some of the district's growing schools, including F.A. Day Middle School. "We're in the middle of a very robust conversation about short term facilities," said Committee Chairwoman Claire Sokoloff. At an Oct. 25 meeting, Sokoloff announced that the committee would push out the vote in order to make the best and most informed decision for the district and its students. Sokoloff noted last night that the committee has received extensive information from the School Department on the effects of enrollment and various construction options on the schools. The group will have to weigh and balance all the factors that have been presented, Sokoloff said…

Newton is in such a bad shape from an infrastructure standpoint that we are being forced to make suboptimal decisions. In other words, were Day Middle School the only problem, we'd probably just bite the bullet and add the 4-6 classrooms that are being suggested. But there are so many other schools in similar dire straits, and we are already in a crunch financially, so we must look at waht I …   more ›

School Administrators: Expansion at Middle School a Must

Students' learning could be adversely affected by large class sizes and cramped rooms.

School Committee members heard a clear request from administrators, teachers and parents Wednesday night: expand some of the district's middle and elementary schools or else the quality of students' education could be in jeopardy. The committee met with a jam-packed room Wednesday night to outline space needs and options for Newton Public Schools. The three-hour meeting addressed the district's growing enrollment and argument for more classrooms and expanded facilities. "We've neglected the buildings and the schools are chopped up all over the system," said School Committee Vice Chairwoman Reenie Murphy. "If we need the space, I think we ought to consider the investment." Last week, Superintendent David Fleishman presented an enrollment …
