New Merchants Bring Excitement to Newton Winter Farmers' Market

For the first time, Newton has a winter farmers' market where you can buy produce, fish, popsicles, maple products and kettlecorn - among many other items. Merchants new to the market talk about why they are excited about the new winter option in Newton.

Newton is one of only a handful of Eastern Massachusetts communities that has a winter farmers’ market, allowing us to get locally sourced produce and foodstuffs in a fashion usually reserved for the warmer months. This week, Newton in the Kitchen will introduce you to the merchants who are new to the Newton Farmers’ Market. It is worthwhile to note that these vendors comprise only about half of the total number of merchants who are selling their wares at the Hyde Community Center every Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. from now until mid-June. PHOTOS: New Market Helps Newton Stay Fresh & Local Year-Round

Newton has started its own winter farmers' market, which runs on Tuesdays from 1:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the Hyde Community Center in Newton Highlands.

After three decades of a successful summer/fall market, the Newton Parks & Recreation Department launched the city's first winter farmers' market on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012. The new market is held at the Hyde Community Center in Newton Highlands on Tuesdays from 1:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. Although the weather was wet and the temperatures were bitter cold, 116 patrons arrived in the first hour the winter market, according to market managers. By 4:30 p.m., roughly 250 came to check out the new market.

New Winter Farmers' Market to Start in Newton this November

A reception for the Newton Farmers' Market will also be held on Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 6 p.m. - 8 p .m. at the Jackson Homestead.

Roughly a month from now, the Newton farmers' markets will end another season. But after things pack up, residents won't have to wait until July for the farm-fresh produce and homemade goods. Starting Nov. 13, Newton will have a winter farmers' market at the Hyde Community Center on Lincoln Street in Newton Highlands.  The market will run on Tuesdays through June, according to Parks & Recreation Market Manager Judy Dore. Similar to the summer/fall farmers' market at Cold Spring Park, the winter market will run from 1:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. According to Dore, Ward 5 Alderman John Rice called Dore to invite the Parks & Recreation Dept. to do a winter market at the community center.  "I loved the idea and I'm recruiting farmers to join us," Dore …

The Newton Farmers' Market opened for the season on Tues., July 3 at Cold Spring Park. The markets run July - October on Tuesdays and Friday at Cold Spring Park and Post 440.

The Newton Farmers' Markets run on Tuesdays and Fridays from July - October. The Tuesday markets are held at Cold Spring Park from 1:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. and the Friday markets are held from noon - 5 p.m. at American Legion Post 440 on California Street.  Many familiar faces will be back again this year including Wally's Wicked Good Ice Cream, Kimball Fruit Farm, Old Friends Farm, the Newton Community Farm and Crystal Brook Farm. New vendors include Turtle Creek Wine, Nella Pasta and Laurelwood Farms.

Newton at the Farmer's Market: Turkey Tips, Snap Peas and Garilc

During its run, I am spotlighting various merchants at the Tuesday Cold Springs Farmers' Market. I will be using their ingredients to create and share some recipes that you can make at home.
