Anyone who has not had a flu shot should not visit the hospital.
With a flu epidemic affecting much of the country, local hospitals are hoping to protect their patients by keeping visits to a minimum. Newton-Wellesley Hospital has put in place a number of visitor restrictions to help limit the spread of the flu virus, according to the hospital's website. The city of Newton still has flu vaccines and is also offering a free flu clinic, by appointment, this week at the Newton Free Library.
Updated 4 p.m. With a flu epidemic that has swept the region--and much of the country--many local pharmacies are running low on flu shots as the public rushes to get last-minute vaccinations. As of early Monday afternoon, most of Newton's pharmacies were out of the flu shot, but several reported more shipments were on the way: Before heading out to get a shot, pharmacists urged locals to call the pharmacy in advance to make sure flu vaccines are available. The Newton Dept. of Health & Human Services is also offering free flu shots this week, by appointment. Flu season is upon us, and strong, officials say.
This week, the Red Cross called cases of the flu "widespread," while Boston officials on Wednesday declared the flu outbreak a public health emergency. Is this just another flu season — akin to past winters when H1N1 or norovirus flared up? Or is it more than just a bunch of hype? Some towns in the area are reporting that they're out of flu vaccine. Like many communities, Newton has had a significant increase in flu cases this year (over last year), with more than 130 cases so far this season.
As the region continues to deal with a bad flu season, Newton health officials have offered a number of tips on how to stay healthy and where to get a flu vaccine locally. For those who still need a flu shot, the city of Newton will partner with Newton-Wellesley Hospital to offer a free flu vaccination clinic next week at the Newton Free Library, according to a press release on the city's website . Newton Health Commissioner Dori Zaleznik said the number of confirmed flu cases have jumped significantly from last year's numbers.
As Boston Mayor Thomas Menino declared a health emergency on Wednesday morning due to Boston's flu outbreak, the city of Newton is also battling a high number of flu cases this season. The city of Newton has had 131 confirmed cases of the flu so far this season, according to Newton Health & Human Services Commissioner Dori Zaleznik, a significant jump from last season. "We're definitely seeing a lot of flu this year," Zaleznik told Newton Patch Wednesday afternoon. At this time last year, the city had no confirmed cases of the flu, Zaleznik said, and just two cases were confirmed the entire season. Both the city of Newton and the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce will be offering free flu shots on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
Did you get your flu shot yet? The Newton Dept. of Health and Human Services will be offering a free flu clinic at the Newton Free Library on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The clinic will run from 4:15 p.m. - 6 p.m. The clinic is open to anyone age 6 months and older, regardless of residency or insurance status. Both nasal spray vaccines and injections will be available, according to the city's website. The community flu clinic form can be downloaded in advance from the Health & Human Service website.
