Anyone who has not had a flu shot should not visit the hospital.
With a flu epidemic affecting much of the country, local hospitals are hoping to protect their patients by keeping visits to a minimum. Newton-Wellesley Hospital has put in place a number of visitor restrictions to help limit the spread of the flu virus, according to the hospital's website. The city of Newton still has flu vaccines and is also offering a free flu clinic, by appointment, this week at the Newton Free Library.
Updated 4 p.m. With a flu epidemic that has swept the region--and much of the country--many local pharmacies are running low on flu shots as the public rushes to get last-minute vaccinations. As of early Monday afternoon, most of Newton's pharmacies were out of the flu shot, but several reported more shipments were on the way: Before heading out to get a shot, pharmacists urged locals to call the pharmacy in advance to make sure flu vaccines are available. Newton Health Commissioner Dori Zaleznik said the number of confirmed flu cases have jumped significantly from last year's numbers.
As Boston Mayor Thomas Menino declared a health emergency on Wednesday morning due to Boston's flu outbreak, the city of Newton is also battling a high number of flu cases this season. The city of Newton has had 131 confirmed cases of the flu so far this season, according to Newton Health & Human Services Commissioner Dori Zaleznik, a significant jump from last season. "We're definitely seeing a lot of flu this year," Zaleznik told Newton Patch Wednesday afternoon. At this time last year, the city had no confirmed cases of the flu, Zaleznik said, and just two cases were confirmed the entire season. The Newton Department of Health and Human Services is still offering flu shots by appointment.
The Red Cross says there's still time for folks to get flu shots and be covered from what officials are considering a very active flu season. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said flu outbreaks are high for this time of the season, with "widespread activity" in Massachusetts. If you missed one of Newton's free flu clinics earlier this winter, the Newton Department of Health and Human Services is still offering free flu shots by appointment. To receive a flu shot or the nasal spray flu vaccine, call the department at 617-796-1420 to make an appointment to come the Health Department office in Newton Centre. FYI, I got my flu shot last week at the CVS on Highland in Needham. Not only did they seem to have plenty of shots on hand, but I had ZERO wait time for my shot even though it was midday.   more ›
