Two-Alarm Fire in Auburndale Causes $150,000 in Damages

The Newton Fire Department released more details on the fire that broke out Monday morning at a Freeman Street home.

A fire that broke out in the kitchen of an Auburndale home Monday morning caused an estimated $150,000 in damages, according to a press release issued Tuesday by the Newton Fire Department.  The fire at 64 Freeman St. was first spotted by a passerby who notified a Newton Police officer working a traffic detail nearby. The fire was called in at 11:23 a.m. and Engine 2 and Ladder 1 were on scene in four minutes, the press release said. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found the two-story Cape home completely filled with smoke. They forced open the front door and found the fire in the kitchen on the first floor.  Deputy Chief James Thorne struck a second alarm for the fire at 11:38 a.m. for additional manpower and equipment, the press…

UPDATED: Reported House Fire on Freeman Street in Newton

The fire was in a 1.5-story Cape house and went to two alarms, according to scanner reports.

Updated 1:30 p.m. Check out this story for updates from the scene on Freeman Street. 11:45 a.m. Scanner reports indicate the fire has been knocked down and some crews are being released from the scene. Posted earlier: Newton Fire Department crews are responding to 64 Freeman St. this morning for a reported house fire.  As of 11:30 a.m., a second alarm had been struck for a fire that started in the basement and extended up into the home, according to scanner reports.  The house is a 1.5-story Cape house, according to scanner reports.  As of 11:40 a.m., the main body of the fire had been knocked down, according to scanner reports, and crews had started "extensive" overhaul.  Stay tuned to Patch for more details on this story.
