The Search for Affordable Housing
An unexpected result
If I tell people I live in Newton, I either get an eyebrow raise, or a pithy comment like, "Must be nice." Newton's reputation is one of affluence and exclusivity – and it's not one without merit – the average home value is just under $600,000. When my husband Mark enrolled at Babson College full-time for his MBA, we wanted to relocate from my mother's living room in Hanover to a town closer to Wellesley. Newton seemed like a logical choice, but finding housing on my meager private school teacher's salary proved to be a challenge. We needed a two-bedroom apartment with a price tag that could be considered "affordable housing," which is rent or mortgage plus utilities equaling 30-35% or less of your gross income. My Daughter , A young Teacher just starting out( with College loans) cannot find an affordable rental anywhere in the area.She is very frustrated as am I trying to help her. Everything is either rented before she can look at it or so bad or small.She cannot pay half of her monthly salary for an apartment.She isn't sure what to do at this point.   more ›
