More Than 1,200 T Riders Cited for Fare Evasion This Year

The number of MBTA fare evaders caught this year is slightly less than those caught over the same period last year.

If you've ever thought about jumping a turnstile to catch the T, it’s likely you’ll get hit with a fine for evading the fare. MBTA police have issued 1,231 evasion citations system wide so far in 2013, as of March 25, according to MBTA detective Richard Sullivan. Over the same period last year, the MBTA issued 1,267 citations. The fine for a first-time fare evader is $50, according to Sullivan; future offenses could be as high as $500, according to the law. Operation Fare Game, the MBTA’s initiative to enforce fare laws on the T, from time to time leads to arrests. Christian Fitzgerald, 23, of Roxbury was arrested March 22 after he attempted to dodge a fare at Downtown Crossing by entering through the exit-only gate, according to a transit…

Newton Man Arrested for Alleged Open and Gross Lewdness at Green Line T Stop

The man was arrested for allegedly masturbating at the Beaconsfield Green Line stop in Brookline.

A Newton man was arrested this morning for allegedly masturbating at a Green Line T stop earlier this month.  John Wintersteiner, 30, was arrested at his home today and charged with open and gross lewdness, according to the MBTA Transit Police blog. On Dec. 3 around 7:10 p.m., a 25-year-old female spotted a man -- later identified as Wintersteiner -- masturbating inside the hut on the outbound platform of the Beaconsfield D Line stop in Brookline, Transit Police said.  Transit Police posted security camera photos of the suspect on their blog, asking the public to send any information about the man to Transit Police.  Transit Police detectives then received a tip through the MBTA's anonymous tip text line (873873) about Wintersteiner's …

Salem Man Arrested for Trespassing on MBTA Tracks

The arrest near the Newtonville Commuter Rail station caused delays on the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line.

A Salem man was arrested yesterday after he was caught trespassing on the tracks near the Newtonville Commuter Rail Station. David Conley, 21, of 38 Beaver St., was arrested for trespassing around 8:30 p.m. Monday, police said. According to police reports from the Newton Police, officers were dispatched to the area for a report of a man dressed in black walking on the tracks. Police were able to spot the man (Conley) at the Harvard Street bridge and proceeded to yell at him to get off the tracks. Officers also noticed spray paint cans in Conley's backpack, reports said. MBTA Transit Police reports said officers located Conley in a secure area of the tracks. Conley told Transit Police he was panhandling for money as his car had run out of …
