VIDEO: Tear it Down: Demolition Begins at Former Macy's in Newton

Site of former Macy's in Chestnut Hill demolished to make way for The Sports Club/LA and National Amusements theatre.

Cranes began tearing down the former Macy's building on Route 9 shortly after 10 a.m. today.  The former Chestnut Hill Macy's, which closed a little over a year ago, will be replaced with an athletic store and a cinema, according to WS Development. WS Development Director of Corporate Marketing David Fleming announced that the space will be filled with a new National Amusements theatre and a Sports Club/LA. The store is expected to open in winter 2012, and the theatre in the late winter 2012 or early spring 2013.  He explained new theatre would result in the closing of the AMC Chestnut Hill, which is a few doors down in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. Despite Macy's Closure, No Concerns Arise About Newton's Economy

Local economic observers say Newton businesses recovering slowly, despite department store closure

The company announced the closure would take place following a nine-week clearance sale.  The large building, a monument of commerce in Chestnut Hill, now sits empty and the iconic Macy's sign pulled out from above the doors. But Pat Palmer, president of the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce, said he felt business in Newton was still strong. "From my perspective, …

I think this Macy's would have done better if it had been connected directly to a mall instead of being an entirely separate building. I was surprised to find this when I visited it.   more ›

The Beginning of the End for Macy's

A personal recount of the first day of 10-week sale at the Chestnut Hill Macy's.

I have seen the enemy, and he is us. Well, to be fair, I’d have to say “she” is us since the enemy to whom I am referring are the (mostly female) shoppers and clerks at the Macy’s clearance sale at the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. The store opened Sunday for the first day of its supposed final 10-week run, though I sincerely doubt merchandise will last more than another month.  Shelves were already stripped (with more desirable items probably jettisoned to other stores), and what was left was haphazardly displayed and disorganized. Entering the store from the Hammond Pond Parkway entrance (having narrowly escaped my traversing the parking lot), it was deceptively calm as I came into the cosmetics and fragrances department. The reason? …
