Poll: Most Important U.S. Senate Race Issue?

Democratic frontrunner Elizabeth Warren is expected to challenge Republican U.S. Senator Scott Brown.

In less than three weeks Massachusetts voters will vote in the March 6 Super Tuesday primary, and, while much focus is deservedly upon the upcoming presidential race, we decided to take a look ahead to the Sept. 6 Democratic Senate primary. Democrats will have three choices for someone to challenge Republican Senator Scott Brown: frontrunner and Harvard professor Elizabeth Warren, immigration lawyer Marisa DeFranco, and corporate lawyer James Coyne King. Each of the candidates lists what they believe are the most important issues in this race on their campaign websites: Scott Brown on the issues; Elizabeth Warren on the issues; Marisa DeFranco on the issues; James Coyne King on the issues. But we want to know what you think is the most …

A Glimpse at U.S. Senate Candidate Campaign Finances

A look at candidates who hope to challenge U.S. Sen. Scott Brown — and how much money they've raised so far.

With speculation this week about whether Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren might join the race to become Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 2012, Patch decided to check in on the candidates who have already declared their interest in unseating Scott Brown. Although the primary is more than a year away, a bevy of at least six candidates has been campaigning hard. But will the door-to-door, town-to-town campaigning actually work and bring back Brown's seat to the Democrats? Some of the candidates say they have the start they need to do just that. "We believe this is a strong start for a first-time statewide candidate," said Setti Warren's press secretary Chuck Gilboy. He said the Newton mayor has raised more than $122,000 since …

Meet U.S. Senate Candidate Herb Robinson Tonight in Newton

The Democrat will be at the Auburndale Community Library at 7:30 p.m.

As we mentioned in the Five Things You Need to Know Today, U.S. Senate Candidate Herb Robinson will meet with the Newton Democratic City Committee (NDCC) tonight at the Auburndale Community Library to talk about his campaign to unseat Scott Brown. Robinson, who lives in Newton and is a NDCC member, specifies on his website that he is not a politician but an engineer with more than 30 years experience in private industry. He graduated from Cornell University and currently works at Stratus Technologies. The "socially liberal and fiscally conservative" candidate covers a wide range of issues on his site, including concerns over nuclear power and the need for leadership at a time when the country is in a "crisis." The Newton Democratic City …

Newton Wednesday Night: U.S. Senate Candidate DeFranco Speaks to the Few

DeFranco tells Democratic gathering that she is the one who will stand up for the little guy.

On a night of wicked Newton weather — tornado watches and intense thunderstorms — only about a dozen people showed up in Auburndale Wednesday to hear U.S. Senate candidate Marisa DeFranco speak at the latest "Coffee with the Candidates" hosted by Newton Democrats. But DeFranco is clearly used to small groups; she even mentioned Barack Obama's strategy of working the small groups of the Democratic caucuses as a model for building support for her ideas, and stands person by person. "Building the base," as she put it. DeFranco didn't get the turnout Brookline resident Alan Khazei got a few weeks ago, as a local guy; DeFranco's base is north of Boston, with an immigration law practice in Salem and a home in Middleton. The audience, many of …

U.S. Senate Candidate Marisa DeFranco Meets with Newton Dems Tonight

Stop by and meet with the U.S. Senate Candidate at the Auburndale Community Library.

The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Auburndale Community Library, 375 Auburn St. A Middleton resident and Salem-based immigration attorney, DeFranco announced her bid in late March.  According to her website, DeFranco is running "to ensure that every American have the opportunity and the very access to that American Dream" and to "to put the government back in the hands of the people." Newton Mayor Setti Warren announced his bid for the U.S. Senate seat early last month. NDCC Vice-Chair Shawn Fitzgibbons …
