The fast food giant says the Fish McBites Happy Meal comes with seven nuggets of fried fish, French fries, apple slices and a drink. According to USA Today, the rollout the the Fish McBites Happy Meal is the first of several new limited-time meal offerings. Lent is marked by many Christians in the 40-day runup to Easter. McDonald's action comes on the heels of the U.S. government suspending purchases of meat which would have gone to the school lunch program.
McDonald's is reportedly suspending meat purchases from a California company after hearing health and animal cruelty concerns. There are two McDonald's locations in Newton including one in Nonantum and a recently renovated location on Needham Street. McDonald's is one of several fast-food chains reportedly to cut off its relationship with Central Valley Meat Company after the federal government suspended its purchases. The move comes after an animal welfare group distributed a video of what appeared to be sick cows being abused as workers tried to get them to walk to slaughter, according to the AP. Regulations prohibit cows that can't walk from being slaughtered, according to the AP. The rule is meant to prohibit cows infected with mad cow…

Bob Broughton, director of operations at the Needham Street restaurant, told Newton Patch in April that the remodel includes a new dining area, a new kitchen as well as new bathrooms and equipment. According to Patch correspondent Wendy Schapiro, who stopped by the new McDonald's on Saturday, the Needham Street restaurant is running daily specials to celebrate its reopening, including an offer for a free small hot coffee from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. every day. The Needham Street McDonald's, which has been in business for more…

McDonald's hopes to reopen sometime in June, while Starbucks will be back in business next week.
Updated 6:30 p.m. Needham Street certainly is busy these days. Between the hubbub over Jonathan's Bar & Grill opening soon and work at the now-closed Pizzapalooza spot, you may have missed a bit of renovation going on at Starbucks. The Needham Street location of the Seattle-based coffee chain is currently closed for renovations. According to a Starbucks spokesman, the location will reopen a week from today, April 26. Once the 10-day renovation is finished, the coffee shop will have new furniture inside and out as well as a Clover brewing system, the spokesman said via email. In addition, the store will have a new layout and "flow," to help with the coffee shop's small size. As we noted last month, the McDonald's on Needham Street is …
